So a while back my X was leaking trans fluid quite bad. Someone said a seal got overheated and to let it cool off and it will be fine. Well I have a trip coming up in a few days to go move my camper across a couple of states. I want to make sure Beast, that's what I named it, will be fine and not leak again. I'm curious to know if this seal needs replaced and if so, is it hard to do by myself? Or should I look into a mechanic fixing it?
I do not know your mechanical apptitude, but you do have to pull the transmission. Assuming it is the common front pump seal that is leaking here is a video to give you an idea.
i’m not a mechanic, but if my truck was leaking transmission oil “real bad” (it shouldn’t leak at all), i wouldn’t count on it self healing (they don’t).
my advice would be to take it in and get if fixed so that your trip isn’t ruined.

Well. I just called a couple of places for estimates. The lowest I got was $1010, that was just to have it replaced. A trans shop I called said the whole trans would have to be overhauled at $2700. I definitely don't have either of those amounts so I'm just gonna have to take it as easy as possible and cross my fingers.

That's about right. This isn't a quick or easy job.

Make sure to keep this shop's information! You want to ALWAYS avoid that shop unless you really want to get ripped off.

Most of the time when this seal leaks it will work again once it cools down. If it isn't overheated again it may last a very long time.
Check the coolers up front to see if there is any debris that is blocking the airflow. That will overheat the trans and cause this seal to get soft and leak. Also check the two trans lines from the trans to the radiator to see if they are damaged. If there isn't good ATF flow the trans will overheat.

no debris, but these bent fins might have something to do wit it.
I had this same issue 3 years ago on vacation at the beach. Deep soft sand and hot temps caused my tranny (2000 ex 7.3) to puke about 3 qts of fluid. I thought I was in trouble, being 8 hours from home. After it cooled down and topped it off, she got us home just fine. At that point I changed to the 6.0 cooler and did the flush the Mark K. way. That was 60,000+ miles ago and no issues. And I do pull trailers daily with it, up to 10k# or so.

Unfortunately I am time and funds limited. I am currently using a fin comb trying to clean up as much as I can. the trailer i will be pulling will only be at most 4k pounds.
I had my 96 F150 4x4 front seal done a few months ago(basically the same transmission) along with a trans service and new rear main seal for $700. $1000 for just the seal seems high.

$700 is more than I can afford right now too. TBH I was thinking about seeing if there is some sort of stop leak that I can put in it. I jist worry about Gummi up the trans.

Honestly I would avoid the trip then. If the transmission leaks out it will cost you a whole lot more than $1000. Not to mention the tow to get it back home.
