Temp. Guage and Heating Problems

I have a 97 F150. The last few days when I turn on the heat I get cold air. Sometimes it will blow warm and others cold. At the same time today I had the temperature guage going haywire. It first rose to the normal and then dropped all the way to cold (as if the enging wasn't on), then it jumped all the way to hot but quickly fell back to the normal. I finally did get heat coming through the defroster but only after all this craziness with the guage. After reading some of the other postings I think I should check the sending unit but I don't know where it is on my engine. The other postings were for trucks earlier than 97 and it was my understanding that beginning with 97 there was an engine design change. Any help locating the sending unit or other suggestions regarding the cause of this problem would be appreciated.

Heat coming and going, coupled with a guage fluctation that large tells me you are low on coolant, and possibly need a new thermostat as well. You should start by checking the coolant level, and if low, look for that damned leak.
