Air Compressor Troubleshoot
Craftsman 4hp/25 gallon horizontal tank, 20+ years, good shape well took care of in dry shop.
Yesterday after 30 minuets use, I manually shut it of for a couple minuets.
Flipped back on, browned out shop power for a couple seconds, then motor turns at about quarter speed, struggling hard.
Shut it down & gave it an hour. Flipped it back on & it ran fine.
No drag on the piston/rod. No excessive play on motor, drag,on armature.
Should I be looking at replacing brushes or start capacitors?
Thoughts, recommendations?
Thanx

First thing I would check is the compressor oil level and clarity

Doesn't use oil. Some googling reveals likely start &/or run caps... which are un-obtanium

Start and run caps are easily available, post up the ones you need and we can help.

Grainger has Dayton 2MDU5 that meets spec, but is too fat & $35 locally + would have to be strapped to the motor.
Original is 4-1/2 (4-3/8 seems common) x 1.42 (common what I've found is 1-13/16)
Haven't started trying to chase down the run, but should be more common, but I think it's probably the start.
The whole motor is odd-ball in that it seems most suppliers go from 3-1/2 to 5 hp (this is a 4) & 230vlt while this is an either/or 110/230 for the listed RPM.
I think the frame is a 6 inch (end case bolt across to end case bolt) or "56Z"
Sears Model for giggles
Thanks for your interest & time.

I found a fairly skinny start on Amazon this afternoon that had specs mis-listed till you drilled down for a buck more.
Looks like Zip ties will be the way regardless.
Thanks for the run, looks same.

Drilled down on line & saw start was proper size.
Both should be on the way.
Thanks, I was going cross-eyed & had given up on finding 100% correct item.
Will let y'all know how it works out.

Sometimes a sticky un-loader will also make it hard / slow to turn / start.

I'll try & let you know. Box got here an hour ago. Will be heading out for a week sat & I could use air before trip.
When I flipped it on, if was running 200 RPM if that & the drag on the electrical system was unlike anything I'd ever seen since I built the joint.

If you turn the power off while itls running it stops against head pressure and doesn't have a chance to vent, as I recal. this will cause hard starting. ??????????

Don't know. Swapped out the start cap & ran from zero to auto stop @130.
Dumped the relief valve till the pressure dropped enough to kick on the motor 3 times, all without the shroud, so it should have gotten pretty warm.
Started fine, no drag, no brown out. When I get back, I'll be doing some grinding as to put some stress on it.
Till then, I call it good.
Thanx for your help Gashog.
