I am a new member to this organization, not to computer savvy,so bear with me.I have a 1992 F-350 supercab 155" WB dually with the 7.5/460 V8.This has 350778 miles on the counter.I would like to know what the engine code letter is in the Vin# 1FTJX35G9NKB15456. It has some odd problems just appearing lately, If I leave the truck over night it starts very difficultly, I have to keep slight pressure on the throttle ,{2000 rpm,s} for just about 2.5 min. then the check engine light goes out and then like someone flipped a switch the engine runs perfectly for the rest of the day,but same problem next day! Its running very rich.I hate EFI systems .Give me a carburator and a set of points and I could fix this Ba----d for sure. " I'm an old Cape Codder "

According to the 8th digit (G), it was originally equipped with a 460/7.5 .
You may have a failing PCM(computer), the achilles heel of these are the electrolytic capacitors which typically only have a 20yr live span before breaking down and leaking corrosive fluid over the circuit board.. which causes irrepairable damage. Now you might think... Great.. now I can convert to carb.. but not so fast, if the truck has the E4OD trans which was the most common option, it is 100% computer controlled by the same computer so going to a carb is not a simple project. As much as you might not like it the easiest solution would be to buy a replacement PCM, but with that the truck should run well.

Well EFI has been around for about 35 years now and points ignition systems have been gone longer than that. So the manufacturers didn’t sell computer controlled engine in the northeast? I’m not trying to be critical but they are very primitive systems in these trucks which a “shade tree” mechanic should be able to diagnose with a code reader and basic tools.
I like the simplicity of a carb and points in my Jeep but not for every day use. I’ll take FI.

I have made both KOEO -KOER tests twice and get #33-34+62? Whats this} not in my Chilton or Haynes man.---KoER--# 33 -77-+65? again not in my man.#33&34 are because the EGR is capped and wires disconnected,in fact i am slowly removing everything that i can to find the cause of the original problem of hard starting-poor idle-then after 2-3 min.running all of a sudden it runs like a new engine. I know that the # 5 cyl.is oil fouling ,but this has been happening for 3-4 months (i suspect a broken ring) .Before i rebuild the engine i want to clear up this electric problem .I have also removed the Cat.and Air pump/+hoses, No changes.
if your a carb guy, when you removed the cat did you keep the O2 sensor, you may want to stop disconnecting things EFI, needs to run right, until you know for sure, you dont need what your cutting loose, have you checked fuel pressure with a gauge, timing, test ECT, IAC. TPS, your 62 is it KOEO, or CM it matters, but both have to do with Auto trans, the 65 is KOER trans OD test, you didnt mention if you have auto/manual.
Torq'Ta 58: I Try to be selective in what i remove by observing the results what happens when I restart the engine .I realize that the engineers at Ford had to make a engine control computer that just ran the engine and not connect it to the trans, Too easy to repair ! Lets make it more difficult so that the average joe has to return to the dealer, for more profit. There i have got that off my chest,SORRY. The reason i got the trans codes is i didn't realise that you have to the Koeo tests within the short span allowed ,and i missed some.also there was no # 62 code listed in any manual that i have. This truck has the E4OD trans.and I had a couple of times when reversing and going into forward gear the truck would act like i had put the E brake on and it would not move until i put it into neutral and reved the engine ,and then was OK . As i said, i removed the guts in the cat and.kept the ox sensor .I am now into removing the computer to check for bad capacitors . another good thought by FORD in the placement of that beast !! By for now NEW OLD GUY.
Totally agree on trans control, we have a member here that tests and fixes the PCM, if its not your DD. You could check your trans harness make sure its hunky dory.
Hi everyone ,as i said in my first post, I'm not very computer savvy ! If i don't get back to the person or persons that answer my questions right away,it's not because i'm ignoring you,I AM NOT.I haven't had time enough to sit down and play with this thing! I have to many projects started years ago that i was saving to do when i reached old age, Guess What I am Now here!! I have sent my EEC IV to Montana for " crashtestdummy" to work his magic on it. I hope he received it OK, I am not rushing him ,I know he must be inundated with these damn things!!!
