I have a 1990 f150 5.0 5spd swapped in a 5.8 and the truck started and I shut it off to fill my tires and when I went to start it again nothing junk starter it’s old tested it and it’s no good so I bought a new one Napa says it’s from 87-92 5.0 mustang put the exact same starter in and the truck fired right up but it has a grinding sound now the plate or ring if you will below the starter gear is rubbing on the flywheel so I went back to Napa and called the the dealer for more cross reference info 5.0 and 5.8 use the same starter so I got one again but specified for a 5.8 f150 starter and again they look identical so I put it in and upon starting the truck it seemed fine and 3-4 seconds later it started making the same noise again not as harsh at first progressively got louder within seconds so I **** it off and that’s where I’m at now any help or ideas would be great thanks
When you bought the new starter, did you tell them you need one for an automatic? There is a difference between standard and automatic transmission based starters.
the first time the second one they gave me they claim it for 90 f150 5.8 but has the same part number as well as the one for 87-92 mustang 5.0 it is possible that they are getting the wrong part from manufacture
examples below, using their 'NAPA reman' on both vehicles, only the automatic has same part # RAY 2449227 which is the wrong starter, for your 5-speed the manual starter for your truck is different #RAY 2449232, and this is the starter you need.
