Been told it might be the stock base for the antenna but attaching the cable cleans up weak stations well (Locally).
My issue is when traveling as I lose stations within 30 miles North of Portland that come in well 55 miles away in my Frontier. All previous vehicles performed about the well but not the Ford.
I cranked up my emergency radio in Castlerock (50 Miles) and it pulled in stations better than the van. Maybe its the JVC Head unit ? Previous owner did not even plug the antenna cable in.
Forum has been invaluable. Fixed my fan resistor and working on the vacuum fix now. Like having a project vehicle again as the Nissan has zero issues haha ! The Beast
Since the '70's I've always relied on Pioneer's Supertuner automotive head units. Being down in the valley Corv/Alb I can easily tell poor reception by weather I( can pull in KGON or not. Pioneer seems to always do the trick for me.

I just ordered a cheapie 26.5" antenna with cable off of eBay to see if it helps. I may upgrade the head as I am Old School and love Terrestrial Radio. Luckily this thing plays off of a Flash Drive so it never "has" to be quiet.
You are doing what I would have done.....trying the radio with a different Antenna. This will isolate the problem.
That's what I thought. I am not in love with this JVC by any stretch and HATE Android Auto (Annoying). If this works out I may buy a new Ford base or simply mount it and seal up the stock mounting holes. If not I will shop a new Dual Din tuner setup.
1) receiver sensitivity measured in dbm or microvolts
2) noise floor
3) antenna gain
#2 is enviro related, varies and not really controllable — the FM band is getting stepped on a lot these days
#1 is fixable with a better rcvr
#3 you can brute force with a signal amp

Will be installing a new antenna as a test to see if its the JVC that is the weak link. May score a Super Tuner if needed.
Was told by a US manufacturer of antennas that the Ford base may be bad as well. Stock setup supplies a noticeable difference when plugged in locally so my assumption is the base is OK. Until I travel North 50 miles I will not know if the test antenna improves reception. If it still fades at 30 miles I will blame the receiver and look to replace.
Will post up on what I find,
