AM Sucks!

Hi there,

I've got a '03 F250 SD and pretty much ever since I bought it new the radio's reception has sucked, especially on the AM dial. It's bad enough during the day, but when the lights come on, forget it! The white noise completely drowns out the radio signal. It's a factory Ford radio with the CD/Cassette combo.

I've considered replacing the radio, but thought I might try some other things to narrow it down, if anyone can suggest something, before spending the money.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Barry

It sounds like your antenna is picking up something from the engine compartment (probably the alternator). You can try putting some shielding over the antenna cable from the antenna to the head unit.

I'm not sure, but there might be a filter you can plug in-between the antenna plug and the radio receptable that can eliminate some of the engine noise.

A more expensive (and less likely) problem could be there's a problem with your alternator and it's emitting a field that is being picked up by the antenna.

Also, possible chafing of the antenna cable. You could also re-route the cable further from engine components.

These are all just some possibilities I'm spitballing. Not saying any of them are the culprit, but at least it's something to consider.

Just my .02

I would make sure the antenna is the stock unit, and is in good shape. If the shield on the antenna cable is damaged, or it's not the stock antenna, then that can cause AM problems.
