I am starting to work on my sons f1 and i am working on passenger upper and lower fender. There are two holes in the top of the fender, that look like they have been brazed up and then had filler over top to smooth it out. I was just wondering if the f1 would have came factory with lights on the fender? I have saw those lights on like the bigger trucks. The other hole is at the rear of the fender it has also been filled. Really not sure what it would have been for. We bought the truck all apart and now slowly starting to see what we are working with. We have 2 other 48-50 in the family but me having a 55 this is new territory.
The F-1 models (we're talking 48 to 52) did not have factory turn signals, everything installed was aftermarket. Over time, various signal kits may have been used including many that required a second set of front & back lens units. Since the signal were separate from the factory lights, finding evidence of old mounting holes isn't unusual.
Also another question while i am thinking about it. The front fender braces that mount to the inner fenders, do the fenders just sit on top of those or are they mounted to the fenders in some way. Thanks for help guys. I am sure more questions will arise quickly. The truck is kind of a basket case and has been apart for a while and I am bringing it to my house from my dads piece by piece to start on.
There was a turn signal kit available that could have been ordered from Ford and installed by the selling dealer, or anyone subsequent after the sale. The kit included 4 lamps and a column mounted switch with all the wiring necessary for hookup. It's possible your truck had that, or something similar, and was removed during a previous repair or restoration if they were broken or inoperative.
The fender braces should have a bolt at the wheel opening, and a rubber pad on the top of the brace so the fender didn't rattle against it. The braces are the same, left and right.
One other note, you may already know this by having other '48-50 trucks, the font bottom and top of the fenders do not match up. The bottom fender sticks out a little further than the top to mimic the body line on the back of the front fender and the back fender. Many years ago before the internet and before the Bonus Built trucks were popular I reworked the front fenders on my F-2 thinking they should be even only to later find out they bottom should stick out a bit.
