The way I understand it (which may not be completely accurate) is that they probably programmed it to an updated (but still stock) program. You need to know what version it was that you had in it when you used the programmer.
The PCM never needed to be messed with, but most dealers are going to do that to you. IMO, anyone with an EGR delete that takes their vehicle to the dealership for work is likely to get a new PCM software that will eliminate the EGR delete.
Ok this is starting to make sense. The tech told me that when the ficm is programmed the pcm is programmed aswell. To the most updated version. The sct is reading not only the vin but also the software version in the pcm. It marries to not only the vin but the software version as well. So my only options are see if the ford dealer can revert it back to the old software version or buy a new sct programmer that will now marry to this software version? I have a call into sct tech support and I’m hoping there is some sort of unlock available on the device for situations like these. I will report back with my findings.
Right so if I had returned my truck to stock with my sct then my sct would no longer be married and when I got the truck back I could’ve remarried it back to my truck and it’s new updated software. makes perfect sense now. Sure wish I had thought of that before sending it in. Hopefully I can find a solution through sct without needing to buy a new programmer.
To the OP - Why on earth did you take it to the dealer instead of just buying an aftermarket or rebuilt FICM? If you're capable of doing all the testing, you're certainly capable of replacing it.
Now that tuners are all of a sudden scared of having anything to do with trucks with EGR deletes, you may have a rocky road ahead.
Thanks for the replies guys. Turns out I didn’t do enough research. I was under the impression that the ficm had to be programmed by the dealer. Hence why I sent to the dealer. Lesson learned. I didn’t contact power hungry because a sales rep from sct got back to me. They are able to unlock the programmer for me remotely but they usually charge $150 for that service. However after I explained the situation the sales rep informed me that in cases like this they wave the fee for the unlock. So I’ve sent my device serial number and a copy of the ficm replacement bill into them and they are unlocking it remotely for me so I can reload the tune into my new pcm software. I think that’s pretty great of sct to offer that for people like me who have made this mistake. Something to keep in mind if anyone else makes the same mistake I did. Thank to all you guys for the advice and I hope this thread helps someone avoid the same mistakes in the future!
If they unlock and update your programmer, will you still be able to to turn off wrench lite because of your egr delete? Some of the other guys know more on this. Something to look into.
Hey guys, for anyone still following along, I apologize for the delay. The free unlock was sent to my devices serial number by sct. However sct device updater software doesn’t work with Mac products. Took me forever to get the admin rights at work to be able to download the device updater program to a work computer. So I got the updater program downloaded and started the download to my device. Over 5000 updates to do! Makes sense as I have never updated it since owning it. Didn’t have a choice though as I needed the unlock. So I left it overnight to complete the download. Came back the next day to a red screen saying device in bootloader mode. Uh oh. I got sct tech support on the phone. The tech logged in remotely to my computer and reloaded the software and got my device working again! He confirmed the update and the unlock for me. However as mentioned in the previous post, the tech informed me that the egr off option is no longer available with the device updated. I guess sct ran into some trouble with epa January 2019 and released an update that no longer supported egr off. So to
anyone who has not updated their device and is using the egr off function, DO NOT UPDATE YOUR DEVICE! Unfortunately I had no choice as I had locked myself out of it. The tech on the phone was nice enough to tell me that if I can find a custom tune that has egr off written in then in can load that custom tune into the x4 and then onto the truck, once again turning off my egr. Sorry for the long winded post guys!
coles notes as follows:
sct customer/tech support is awesome!!!
do not update your x4 if you’re using egr off
make sure your truck is stock programming before replacing any computers
And last but not least, I am now looking for a recommendation for a custom tune that incorporates egr off that I can buy for my x4.
thanks to all that followed along and helped me along the way. Hope my mistakes and the info posted here helps somebody else out!
