Transmission Cooler?

Should I install a transmission cooler in my Excursion?

If yes, which one do you recommend?

Mine is a 2004 with the 5.4L

Thanks in advance

It has two transmission coolers from the factory.

Why do you think you need more cooling? Is the transmission running hot?

She's not running hot.

Haven't gotten to know the Excursion well just yet as we just got it. Modified everything on our F350 back in 2002 - 2003 when we first bought it new. Thought I'd just ask to see if there are any typical things people are modifying on the Excursions, including adding transmission coolers. Mine is a 5.4L

The 6.0 liter diesel has the largest OEM cooler. I swapped out my 6.8 liter gas transmission cooler for the 6.0 and it was an easy swap, even for me. Compared to my stock one, it is huge!

Do this ^^^^
I installed mine before a trip from Portland to Idaho with an extra 8K in weight.
July, 90+ temps, mountain passes, 70-75 MPH... Never ran more than 80 degrees hotter than ambient air temp.

Are you going to be towing heavy with the 5.4 EX? I pulled our 9,500lb TH and 12,000lb TT over 35K miles with the factory 6.8 cooler and only ever saw slightly over 200 degrees maybe 5 times briefly during steep pulls on hot days. I have now swapped up to the 32 row 6.0 cooler and am seeing lower temps under all situations.

If your transmission temperature NEVER goes over 225* while towing under any circumstance ... you're probably good. Premium synthetic transmission oil would be my first step.

However for me... I tow a lot, and heavy, and have exceeded my own criteria many times, so I did install a 37 row Mishimoto cooler. My current modifications to my stock 4R100 are: 37 row cooler, external filter, derale thermostat, tow tunes, and although this is not a modification... I use Mobil 1 synthetic transmission fluid.

These are good advice, thanks a bunch!

102 temp outside today, plus stifling
humidity, friggin beyond brutal, especially in the direct sunlight.

Anybody have pics of what I should buy? (and / or part numbers) Sounds like the 32 or 37 row will be a good choice.

Where can I buy these, and what all other parts should I buy with the transmission cooler so that I can do this myself at home?

Are there any places to buy this at a better price than other places?

Thanks for all the help with this. 👍

I have the Dorman 6.0 32 row cooler through Rockauto, it was $160-ish if I recall correctly. Slips in right in place of the stocker. You will need a set of 3/8" to 1/2" barbed fittings and some 1/2" rubber hose that's rated for hot ATF, I used brass ones from the local hardware store. Someone here a while ago found a set of stainless ones with a 90 degree bend that looked and worded great, I think they found them on a beer brewers supply site.
If swapping up to the 6.0 cooler that would be a great time to do the full 4R100 trans flush to get the job done and have all new fluid. You can read up on the flush up in the Tech Folder.

Or get this one, I just got mine delivered the other day. Comes with 1 1/2” hose installed so still need more 1/2” hose for other side and it also includes the rubber grommets for the bottom

Yep. That's the one. Tasca has good prices. There are a couple of other Ford Dealerships that give good deals on the web. My local Ford Dealer Parts Guy gives me a similar price, so I like to go to him.
I use Red Line Synthetic High-Temp ATF for fluid, Gates "Powering Progress" hoses, BMW hose clamps and respective corrugated plastic protective loom. I took some old larger diameter hose pieces and duct taped them to areas on the hoses where they sneak around the edge of the radiator.

Flyboy1100,
Thanks for the link! That looks to be an easy swap, and an easy install.

Way back, around 2002, before the 6.0 was out, I installed a True Cool 40,000 transmission cooler in my in my 7.3 F350. That was one heck of a gigantic cooler for sure.

Now, with the 6.0 trans cooler available, the one you posted in the link, that one looks to be quite and easy simple swap. Any tips or tricks to installing it?

Also, are there any issues or anything negative to swapping to synthetic ATF ??

I did a flush and went to Mobil 1 trans fluid in a non-problematic 80,000 mile Lincoln Town Car many years back, and the trans started slipping shortly after flushing it using the synthetic ATF.

Anyone had any transmission issues after swapping from convential ATF over to the synthetic ATF ??

What is the difference between these two FORD transmission oil coolers?

5C3Z-7A095-CA vs FO4050104

When doing a search for 5C3Z-7A095-CA , the other part number FO4050104 keeps coming up.

Are they the same item?
Or is there some sort of difference between the two oil coolers?

The only negative to using synthetic ATF (MERCON V ONLY) is the cost of the fluid.

There was something else going on. There is no reason that flushing a trans with the proper synthetic ATF will cause the trans to slip. If the wrong fluid were used it would be expected that the trans would slip.
