4 wheel drive intermittent

2002 f150 V8 Triton.
4 wheel drive system suddenly has a ghost and I think it’s electrical, but I’m unfamiliar with this system and the various components and how it all ties together or locations and I can’t find any relative schematics. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If the system is working, it works perfectly.
You turn the 4 wheel drive selection switch on the dash and you can here Everything engage. Vacuum actuator on the from diff, shift motor and shift forks in the transfer case, vacuum actuators mounted on the firewall, solenoids/relays in the dash, indicator lights in the instrument cluster; it all functions properly!

When the “ghost” completely random and intermittently appears and the 4 wheel stops working, EVERYTHING stops working.
Turn the switch on the dash and absolutely nothing from the entire system. Nothing from the front diff, vacuum actuators on the firewall, transfer case, indicator lights, the solenoids/relay in the dash don’t even click.
OR, the 4 wheel drive might engage, but it won’t disengage until something resets the “ghost”.
OR, the 4 wheel drive will engage for an unknown amount of time then suddenly the entire system shuts off and you only have 2 wheel drive.
There’s really no pattern.
The truck came from Texas and when I had to replace the heater core a few months ago, there is obvious signs of water damage, possibly from a flood.
Any advice and component locations to possibly check/test would be greatly appreciated!

I would check for a leaking windshield on the driver side.
It can leak right on the Control module, cause corrosion and do what your describing.
When it's working and proper, don't do anything with the 4wd.
It's not the problem.
Inital control is.
Good luck.

Thank you!
I have been leaning towards the control module, but have been hesitant because of not knowing how to diagnose or test it.
As for water leaking and corroding, the truck came from Texas and when I replaced the heater core a few months ago, I noticed some signs of water damage then, like the truck has possibly been through a flood or hurricane.
