I have a on and off terrible grinding sound on my 2000 7.3.
I started the truck today after letting it sit about a week because it had a terrivle grind, almost like someone was shaking a bag of tin cans or running a grinder. The truck ran fine for about 45 min, shifted great sounded great it was fine. Took it over to a parking lot to idle since I had to jump it (batteries were dead) and while driving over the dash went out and so did the window buttons, once I got there it idled about 20 minutes and shut itself off (I assume low power however the alternator is brand new, so maybe its struggling to charge very dead batteries?)
after getting a jump from it shutting off it made the same terrible grinding sound and shut off when I tried to limp it home.
Now im sitting here trying to figure out what would make a sound like that from lower engine/trans area that only happens in an extremely low power state?
Its no belts, not pulleys, the starter was tested fine (it almost sounds like its not disengaging?) Fly wheel is fine and no wobble (flex plate) TQ bolts are tight.
it seems to only be after starting on near dead batteries from a jump.
alternator may be new but it's just not putting enough voltage out to let it run properly, once a battery has less than 9.6 volts it is dead.
Replace both batteries and try it again, It will make it a whole lot easier to diagnose.
So, lets take this one step at a time.
Dead batteries, you jump it, it runs fine for 45 min. No noise?
Dash and window buttons stop working on drive.
While at idle, the truck dies. Re jump start. Is this when the noise started?
Is the noise when moving, or you can hear it at idle too?
Pull the belt off and is the nose still there?
NO - its an accessory or pulley bearing that is going out. Possibly alternator.
What are the voltage of the batteries KOEO and KOER?
What is the voltage output of the alternator?
YES - use a long screw driver to your ear or an automotive stethoscope to pinpoint exactly where the noise is coming from. The interior electrical problem is unrelated to the noise. Possibly due to batteries not taking a charge or faulty alternator.
Let us know what you find.
Okay so I changed both batteries and put a new alternator.
so now we have new alternator, starter and batteries. First start it runs great second start or hot start it grinds. It essentially sounds exactly like the starter is staying engaged and when you shut it off you hear the sound of the starter when you try to start the truck while its already on..
any ideas?
Pull the starter and have a friend rotate the engine and inspect the teeth.
Good luck!

Flywheel looks good. I found an old TSB about the lock cylinder staying partially engaged at times and it seems very close to my current problem. Also going to do the fender solenoid today.. hoping this fixes it and will update here if so.

Instead of throwing parts at it, why not check the operation of the solenoid? Test light or a voltmeter on the starter side of the solenoid. With the truck running, there should be no power on that side. If there is, the solenoid is hanging up. Pull the wire that engages the solenoid and see if it stays engaged. If it is still engaged, the solenoid is hanging up. If it stops, the key switch is hanging up. All that, and you've identified the problem without having to spend a dime. Now take that money you saved to get the correct part fixed..
Tested the Solenoid and it only gets power on one post so I changed it out.
seemed to work for about 15 min and then starter happening again. Can this be the starter ground? I remember the starter has spacers cause they aren't the original bolts. Should I run a ground from starter to frame or similiar?
