Average Coolant Temps

Working on a friends 2005 Excursion with a 6.0 and we noticed the coolant temp seems a bit high. Running down the highway at 70mph and 90 degree air temps the ECT is running up to 220*. Oil temps are <10 degrees difference. We installed a new motorcraft thermostat just to rule that out but it didn't seem to make a difference. What coolant temps should we be seeing? Mod list below.

ECT temps should not reach 194*F with no load.
remove thermostat and do a test drive if temps are falling.
if not: flush radiator/cooling system/oil cooler
fan is working properly?

Confused? Not above 194? If the thermostat is a 192(which is stock temp), and air temp is 85+ degrees out, the temp will always be hotter than that. I dont understand? I'm personally thinking about going to the 180° thermostat.

My Excursion always runs 200 to 210 when it's above 85° outside, towing runs in the 210 to 225 range depending on how big the hills/foothills are) I just did a backflush, acid flush of the cooling system, and run ELC.

I can see where Hartwig is coming from. For the longest time, I never saw much over 194-196 when driving without load (and I live in a region where 95 + degree heat is common for 3-4 months). I am not sure exactly when it started, but it increased noticeably (approximately) 2-3 years ago .... I was seeing in the 200-205 region - no load.

After installing the snow plow clutch recently, I am down to the 194-198 degree range.

I usually keep close tabs on the engine data AND on modifications, but I was very busy in that time period and didn't watch temperatures close enough. I know that I installed new tunes, installed a new BPD water pump, and a new BPD radiator - about that time frame (I also removed the stator about then, but I ABSOLUTELY don't want that to become the focus of the thread).

After noticing this, I changed the thermostat several times and none of those changes did anything to impact the ECT readings I was getting.

outside temp. 85°F: my ECT is 188-194°F, EOT 208°F F350 camper 14300lbs 60mph flat road ~8psi boost. My delta has increased since i deleted the EGR cooler. Oil cooler was done together with the EGR delete last year.

Something is definitely wrong then. It has a fairly new radiator and looks clean so a blockage doesn't seem likely to me. I used a rad vac to put the coolant back in the system after swapping the thermostat so I don't think there is any air pockets in the system. Possibly water pump?

Kylebryan,

I would start with a fan issue. What is your FSS? By 207 the fan should be turning 1800-2000rpm, bringing temps down. At 220F it should be screaming at full engine speed. Check wiring first, make sure the harness hasn't been damaged by the fan. Second, if you EGR is deleted and the valve is gone that can cause the fan to not engage as well. After that it's probably a fan clutch issue.

In our 100+ summer temps my truck will run 198-200 ECT running down the flat highway empty. Towing it's typically hitting the 207F fan cut-in.

I to run about 192-197 ECT and 200- 203 Eot unloaded at about 75 mph.
Now if I play, my oil temp will get up to about 210 or so.
Ambient temp outside is 95-98°

Here's a few shots from the data log.

Hi, looking at your data logs, there is definitely something wrong with the fan. At the temps you show the fan speed is way down.

How old and what make is the fan clutch?

My friend bought the X about a year ago used so we really have no idea how old the clutch is or the brand. The truck has 260k miles currently.

Ok... I WISH mine ran that cool. Where do you find this snow plow clutch, or something better than factory? I have 270k+ on my Excursion and would like to cool it down, or even a lower temp thermostat, or both?? Thank you

With a good thermostat mine runs 190-192 unloaded, towing I see 194-198, regardless of outside air temp. After a year or so the thermostat goes south and the temps will wander all over. Current Stant thermostat is just over year old and runs 186-188 with outside air temps at 95+. This is the first time I have had one fail cold, all the rest have failed hot, I think I have 5 or 6 on the healing shelf. I'm running a stock fan clutch, shroud installed and no tunes other than Atlas 40 and rolled back strategy.

Replaced the fan yesterday and took the truck for a drive. Coolant still got up to 218 after about 30 minutes. Just trying to figure out what I need to look at from here.
