I got my eye on a couple Expeditions to do some mild off road/ overland. I was wondering which generation Expedition is generally more off road capable.(gen1 97-02 or gen2 03-06) I would start barely more than stock and slowly make mods to be a better trail rig. I was just curious which is better out of the box.
Note: I know a Bronco would be a better rig, but every Bronco for sale around here is made of gold. I can get in an Expy for under $3K and start wheeling.
The early models with the solid rear axle will take a little more lift than the later Independent rear. Also check the wheel options as they changed from 5 to 6 lug later on. The later models (not sure when) have the 2wd option instead of awd as the base selection. There are some that are heavily modded. You may check the expedition forums for some nice builds. www.expeditionforum.com I'd just look for the best solid foundation and build it up.
97-98 have 2wd as an option on the transfer case switch, 99+ is A4WD. Generally speaking, First Gens (97-02) are more akin to their F150/Bronco siblings, while Second Gen (03-06) is a bit more "soccer mom".
I tend to be VERY picky about how I do any mod, such as the 5-Switch mod for the Overhead Console which uses regular power window switches for the extra switches. As a result, every mod I do is overbuilt and underworked and will last forever.
