Hey guys! it's been a while and I've gotten pretty far with my resto-mod. I've boxed in the frame, blasted and painted it. Installed the IFS and rear diff and disc brakes. I am now dropping in the engine but I have the entire body off the frame and being prepped, blasted blocked and primed. I'm sitting pretty good back of the radiator but would like to know where I might be relative to the firewall. Does anyone have the dimension from the back of the radiator cross member to the firewall?
I just measured mine, My Rad support is in the forward 6 Cylinder position. I checked straight back to the forward flat area where the heater goes is 34". Along the inner fender is 35". (probably not as useful) The center section is recessed about 2-2.5 inches.
On the inner fenders and front crossmember there are two sets of holes to mount the radiator support. The forward ones are for the 6 cyl, and the back ones are for the 8 cyl. There are also two positions for the hood wind deflector that seals to the top of the radiator. (The deflectors are different sizes)
I believe some have used the forward position for more modern engines to gain room.
Sorry, I don't have a good picture of this. Maybe someone else can provide one.
Here's a picture that shows the 2 sets of holes. I used the forward set accidentally, not realizing there were 2 positions. Went with an electric fan so it didnt cause any issues...until I tried to put the wind deflector in. Not wanting to take 2 steps back, I ended up cutting and rewelding the deflector to fit.
That makes sense, I was informed by a few folks here that the radiator cradle bolt holes can be placed in two locations. The set of holes closer to the firewall on the frame were for the V8, and the set of holes (2 of them) were for the straight 6. You'll definitely want to use the set for the 6 if you're going to run a modern V8, I had to. let me know if you need images of what I am talking about.
Thanks everybody for all the good advice. It really helps. I purchased this project I'm finished by another gentleman. Kid added a radiator cooler to the front and also apparently use a radiator that does not fit in the Cradle. So if a bracket to hold the radiator end the cooler. Moving the radiator in the cooler forward above the forward to the holes but leaving the Cradle in the rear set of holes. He then put in electric fan. I would like to see if I can move the entire set up to the forward set of holes but I don't know if that pushes everything too far forward into the grill. I've attached a picture to show my setup. I've also attached a picture showing the cab mount bracket forward position. You can see it's it's just behind the valve cover line.
it looks like my best bet is to get the cap back from the body guy and place it on the frame just to be sure.
it looks to me that the horse shoe is in the V8 position but the radiator is over the 6 cyl. not sure
i don't know if you are using AC or not but there is not much room in front of the radiator for very many things even with the radiator in the horse shoe position.
i would get a radiator that fits in the correct place like gup51 picture then put the radiator and radiator bracket(horse shoe)in the 6 position
my plum bob is in one of the 6 cyl. mount holes
schoo
it doesn't look like my entire message got sent last time. That's actually what I'm thinking about doing with the radiator but I will still have an issue with the transmission cooler in front of it.

their are lots transmission cooler mine is in front of the ac some people mount them on the frame
By the looks of the back of the block in relation to your front cab mounts you should have plenty of clearance. Here is mine during mock up which is very similar.

I'm going to wait until I put the cab on to see exactly how much room I have with the engine. Thanks again!
That really is the best plan. There's a lot of things to consider when doing an engine swap, more than just a front-back location. You need to think about steering and exhaust, too, and any accessories you might be running or considering, (PS, AC, firewall PB, etc). Everybody's build is different, so it's foolish to rely on anyone else's measurements. Good luck with your project.
