My '00 7.3L Excursion interior sound is extremely loud. I measured the level at highway speed using several different apps and they all came in at 92dB. I've already had enough hearing loss so I have started tackling the Dynamat installation project. Now I am confronted with the question of whether to try to remove the entire dash and lay Dynamat along the firewall. I realize that much of the noise in the cabin area is coming from the engine compartment, which would lead to me remove the dash. On the other hand, from what videos I have seen of the dash removal, it looks like a massive undertaking and I am wondering about the cost/benefit analysis. My impression is that removal and reinstallation of the dash could add a couple of days to the project. If doing such would significantly decrease the cabin noise level then I am all for it but if the results are negligible then I will forego the effort.
I will be putting down a layer of Dynamat throughout the vehicle, to include the ceiling, and then a layer of Dynapad in at least the cabin area. I already have installed the Dynamat Hoodliner.
I am sure that someone on this forum has tried the dash removal and sound damping installation. Was it worth the effort?
Be prepared to break things. I don't know what it is about the plastic that Ford uses in their interiors but it gets very brittle with age. No matter how carefully I try to remove something, tabs will break since they're snapped in or are held with clips. I own three Fords that are about the same age as your EX and that is older and something always gets broken. It's a good idea to have some pf this when something breaks. https://www.gorillatough.com/product...super-glue-gel.
I would say not worth it to do all that, just run the dynamat as far as you can reach up in the firewall. You could always add more insulation inside the engine bay side of the firewall.
I would say that if you are that far in....go the WHOLE WAY!
If you research about pulling that dash, there is really not much to doing it. Some bolts across the top, two bolts each side, one near the floor heat outlet...separate the steering shaft...one bolt...a couple of wire connectors....and a friend to help lift....it's long and awkward.
In my view, removing the dash may be worth it, but check this thread out and see what you think. @Nicmike got better results out of the pillar foam that anything else I think. He has dB numbers towards the end as well.
