I want to remove the dash pad from My '78 so I can clean it,and maybe re-dye it. I need to know how to get it out without damaging it,can anyone help me?
77/78/79 that i have removed had 8. But i got fooled when i removed the 73 one , it had 10 , almost broke it before i found them. The later ones have a flat area where they would be but are not there. I believe Ford decided they were not needed after doing the 73s and the presses were made to stamp them out , they just never put the other two in. Somebody else on here said they found 10 too.

Reason: correction
1. remove the glove box, if you have a/c PITA x2
2. remove the instrument cluster, it can be done without removing it, but what a PITA x1
3. there are 2 on the far L and R side that are close to each other
4. and 1 for the dash pad "tip" in the middle and one above it.
5. the rest are easy to locate
6. you do not have to remove the phillips screws on the top of the metal dash
7. when it is loose, it will lift right off

Thanks for the info! Yes it has a/c, so I see PITA in My future. But I have all fall, and winter to work on it, so it will keep Me busy
I just took a black dash pad with NO cracks off a a/c truck, it took me 30 min from start to finish. The old one off my none a/c truck took me 15, start to finish....
No prying it required, just get all the nuts off, I'll go count them tomorrow and get you the exact #.
You could recover it with leather, vinyl or some kind of material? As far a fixing a crack once the heat hits it, the edges of the crack will start to curl.
Cut out the bad spot, bondo it and recover it.
I am sure there is some smart FTE'er that has a better idea or way to do it??

Ok a total of 8.... 2 far left, 2 far right (they are like a 1" or less between them), 2 in the middle (1 on the dash tip and 1 in line with it, like 1" or so away), and 1 and 1 in between those.
With a a/c truck, the vent tube will really be in the way, especially on the far L and R ones.
With the instrument panel out its a lot easier, no need to remove the radio or environmental control panel.
Remember to be easy with the speedo connection, you have to squeeze the white collar, and then pull the cable and collar out together.
Also remember the pin on the headlight switch to get the rod out. Disconnect the battery before you to that.
