I've just gotten a really good deal on a 7.3 IDI motor and am wanting to swap it into my truck since the motor and transmission are ready to go out on it and I would like to go for an automatic with 4x4 and ive been leaning towards a c6 but i really don't know much about transmissions especially ford transmissions and im hearing that the c6 has to be specifically a diesel case or it won't bolt up but im trying to make this swap as painless as I can who can help me out I believe the motor is a 90 model i plan on going over it when i have the chance but for fabricating sake i want to have a transmission on hand so i can essentially get the swap done
no matter what trans you use, it has to be from a diesel. C6 is a mechanical trans, but does not have overdrive so you will be limited to around 55-60 mph. an E40D is an overdrive automatic, but it will require a computer to run the trans.
Would suggest a E40D / 4R100 if you go auto, will need a computer as tjc said, shift 4 seems to be the go to aftermarket controller. Youll want a later one, something like a 96-98 from a powerstroke would be most ideal. I know with manuals you can drill the bell for the lower holes to make a 460 trans work, dont see why you cant with an automatic.
on the C6 not only is the bolt pattern different the Internals are different between Diesel and Gas... the E4OD main difference is just the bolt pattern.
the Gen2 Quick4 would be the only stand alone controller I would recommend for the E4OD
using an OEM Controller may be fine too but the OP hasn't given us any info on the Truck that this is to be installed in.
do you plan on a steering column change do you need to add clutch pedal and clutch master cylinder, floor pan maybe? ... you still haven't said anything about what truck you are planning to put all this in.

just so many unanswered variables.
its completely custom I just need to know which transmission is the easiest to work with my 7.3 idi, if I go manual I will have to add everything to go along with it

I'm not sure any transmission would qualify as "easiest", they all have different quirks...
Automatics are definitely easier to drive as you don't need to worry about the shifting. Manuals take more thinking while driving to get make sure its in the gear it needs for the engine rpm and task at hand, but its arguable they may be more reliable with simple maintenance and less likely to leave you completely stranded in case something goes wrong.
Personally, I prefer a manual for the extra control it gives, especially while towing. I ended up swapping a ZF6 into my current daily driver, but wouldn't recommend it as it wasn't simple, easy or cheap. (It wasn't terribly hard either, but NOT just a bolt in deal)
What you need to do is look at your end goal, who will be driving the truck? How will it be driven? Hard and fast? Loaded and/or towing? Long hauls, or stop and go? All of those will help decide whats best for you and your truck.

the easiest would be a C6 for Diesel.
Shift linkage is simple and you can use a Manual Modulator..... you can also add an Over Drive if you feel the need.

I'm going to be driving the truck daily not necessarily hard or fast or even loaded and towing often i can drive up to 100 miles a day just for work and i do want the capability of towing something fairly heavy like a camper or a trailer with a car because im constantly getting new projects and selling them so i want versatile and reliable

I've noticed my problem seems to be finding one cause I would like to keep the truck an automatic and I would like to keep it 4x4 thats my biggest thing but if its easier to find a manual 4x4 trans to bolt up to my 7.3 idi then ill convert it
