A friend and I are tearing out the interior in a new-to-me F150 4.9 manual 4x4. In the process I discovered that the gear shift retaining bolt was wired and ziptied in place!
I consulted the Great Sage (youtube) and figured out how this bolt comes out: take off the nut, put it on the other end, tighten, and then whack the other end (who thought that up??). The retaining bolt is stripped to ruination, and the baling wire and zipties and bubble gum and shoelaces stood in as the nut.
I like bubblegum, just not holding on the gear shift. When I was younger the **** in a lemony fresh '97 ranger came off in my hand whilst in motion. I would rather not relive this moment.
I want to replace this shift lever retaining bolt/shifter bolt/locking wedge bolt (supposedly 12 x 1.25mm) but have yet to find a source. Any leads?
If all else fails, can I replace this with a hex bolt and a nylock?
It is a very special kind of bolt which you probably are aware of. There is not a replacement that I am aware of. You will need to go to a Junk yard to find one. There are several online junk yard sites that you can secure parts from also. Here is one. https://www.car-part.com/ Sandy
You have the m5od tranny. Keep lookin and lookin and u will find one online or junkyard.while your doing all of that work i would research the m5od and replace your 3 shift rail rubber plugs (they shrink and go to crap and leak tranny fluid) on the top of the tranny. Very simple while you have the carpet out and all. You can replace them with 5/8 freeze plugs and some black rtv. And leave the tranny in NUETRAL.
A few things you can do. 1) Track down a tap n die kit that contains metric sizes. This should require a M12 x 1.25 die. You can attempt to re-thread both sides of the bolt. You may have to buy a new metric nut. OR 2) Find a welder who can craft you a new retainer bolt. Find a similar metric grade 6 or 8 bolt of similar length needed and talk to a welding shop that can create a similar "lock body" as the original. Many welders can fabricate damn near anything if you're willing to spend an extra buck or two. OR 3) fabricate a steel wedge of similar shape to the bump out on the bolt. Insert the wedge as an internal lock and then just use a conventional nut, lock washer, and bolt to replace the damaged one to hold it in place. Mine had enough threads to repair, so that option worked for me.
