I just installed a 1 wire 100 amp alternator from tuff stuff performance. It doesn't have the secondary harness like the 3G ford ones do, so it's literally just one wire plus a semi-optional ground.
Anyway, PO spliced a bunch of wires together that I had to cut out, and it's making this hard for me to understand. As of right now, I'm down to three unknown wires which are cut in the image below. Can anyone help ID them?
theres the bigger white one, and then the yellow/red from the three pin connector. The pic was taken from the firewall looking forward.
Hi. The yellow and red wires you can live without, ammeter and old alt stuff. The black/yellow should be full time on the battery. You’re going to look for a switched 12v to ignite your alt, look for the two wire plug near the one you show in your pic. The green should be switched 12v. Hope this helps. Mine is hacked too but everything works exactly the way I want so don’t feel bad about it.
I forgot to add, don’t throw your amp gauge away, you can modify it or have it modified into a volt gauge. I had mine modified and it’s really great. C is 14.4 and middle is 12v.
So mine isn't actually a 3G alternator, so I don't need an 'excite' wire as far as I know.... and that's a good thing because I don't have a green wire.
The one I used was the 100a from Tuff Stuff Performance, and I'm pretty sure it's actually a GM design with a Ford front cover.

You have one of these on the back of your alt then.
If you do need switched 12v, the two wire plug below your hand in your pic will have it.
I’ve been down several routes with alternators, and if you ever have to do it again in the future I recommend the 3G. It’s superior.
So update: I got it working without any wiring changes.
Mine doesn't have that little box on the back of it, so maybe tuff stuff changed their design?
I'm seeing 14.2 or 14.3 volts at idle, which indicates that it's definitely charging without any additional wiring, considering that the battery is 12.3 with ignition off.
My idle did increase, but that's likely due to additional coil voltage (old alt was 13.2 idle)
