My new(to me) Excursion had a problem yesterday. I got it Thursday. I drove over 800 miles on Friday. Drove another 20 or so on Saturday. Yesterday I drove less than 5 miles to a drive through wildlife park. While there, waiting I n a long line of vehicles, my trans started leaking BAD. I had to have it towed back to where I'm staying. At this point it is empty of fluid and will not engage ANY gear. I'm thinking front main seal because of where it leaked. Here's a pic.
Any ideas would be helpful. Called a shop from the area and they want $1000 to fix it. Thanks everyone!
Usually, that is the torque converter hub seal. Quite often once the seal cools off it works again.
It can overheat if there is something compromising the transmissions cooling. Debris blocking the cooler, a damaged line to/from the cooler, or a bad cooler bypass are common causes.
