I'm looking for a new steering shaft and dont know where to find on, I've been looking but I'm not the best, so if someone could point me where to get one it would be great, also what's the difference between reduce vibration and not, and do I need to spend the extra money to get one with reduce vibration
Just went thru that on my 88 last year. First you need to adjust the play out of your steering box..if there is any. I would jackstand the front end and check all steering components for play and looseness. Replace parts and adjust as needed. The once all is tight and steering box is adjusted, if you still have play. Your steering shaft has a flat spot and the rest is round.
I was to this point and still had a minute amount of play. I adjusted it out by inserting a .035 feeler guage between the flat spot and it's housing, tight fit, then I put a simple hose clamp around the shaft and feeler guage to hold it in place. Steers like a race car now. Being a short box helps in the hills too.
While you have it up in the air, might as well check the ball joints too.
Borgeson makes replacement shafts. Did one on my '89 F250 and '90 Bronc, quick and easy and no more play. Before you try to adjust the box, have someone turn the wheel while you watch the shaft. You can see if it's play in the shaft or in the box, or both. More than likely you've lost the plastic sleeve that's in the double D shaped tube, that's probably causing the slop. Follow the instructions carefully.
My dad put in a new steering gear box right before I started driving it, so that is good, and its tight, I know I need new tie rods haven't seen about the ball joints yet, but I can tell it's in the shaft because when the trucks off and you move the wheel you can only move it so far being on the ground and truck off, so the little bit if steering you have only goes down to the box and nothing past that because its not on to work the pump, or so that's what I'm thinking, but I already took the shaft off the gear box and slid the inner piece out to feel that plastic of whatever bushing and that's what it was, but I was telling all of this to my dads friend who made one call and is now supposedly having a guy machine that little bushing part out of billet aluminum, so well see how that goes, but for now I just put some feeler stock in there and called it good for now
