Leaned something new, these 6.9 engines go well over 800K miles
Came across this listing for an 86 F250 4 X 4 on CL for $10K.
Guy claims these engines go well over 800K miles. Good luck.
Located in Santa Cruz, Ca.
Iam almost ready to turn 300K on my 86, dang, only 500K to go.
https://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/cto...162889314.html
here is the info case the listing ends.
$10,000 (firm)
Need to sell ASAP
1986 F250 6.9 IDI Lariat (4x4)
A true cherry. 2nd owner. New electric fuel pump (put in as a precaution to mechanical fuel pump failure known on these trucks). 3 yr old all terrain tires. Power windows and locks. Original paint. Fully operational. California truck: garaged most of it's life.
274,000 miles
Repairs:
- original camper shell needs a bit of TLC on a leaky window
- passenger door power lock needs to be fixed
- minor bench seat welding fix of back bar
Note on mileage: if anyone is telling you lower on these types of trucks, beware, they're lying. That said, this engine is known to go to well over 800,000 miles.

If you check the add, he's only got 274,000, but he "says" they'll go 800,000. I've been on a couple IDI forums since about 1991-1992 and never heard of anyone posting they got that high of mileage. I was shooting for high mileage before major engine work, but weakened and bought a DD 1/2 ton for everyday use. Don't tow heavy that much anymore so my IDI diesel just sits 90% of the time with 249,000 miles on it with no internal engine work needed yet.

It`s a used truck, hello.
It looks pretty in the pictures, but once you see them in person, then you see the flaws.
As these get older, it does get harder to find good examples of good one`s not full of rust
Bondo, worn out interiors, worn out door window channel, door gaskets , hinge pins, sun
cooked dash pads, Plastic Door panels, worn out suspension parts etc..... and the list goes
on.
This one is cheep compared to one I saw on CL in the Portland area a while back for
$15K. Just because a guy rebuilds one from stem to stern and dumps a ton of money into
one, does not make it worth more. Only to the guy that invested the money. he wants it back.
I paid $1800 for my 86 back in July 14, rusty and worn out. Bought it in Sacramento, and didn`t
know it it would make it back to Santa Cruz, 153 miles. Bought it just to move to Nevada. It
made 22 trips back and forth to haul all our treasures.
Dumped a ton of money into her the past 104K miles, and she is still a $1800 truck.
It was maintenance work that need to be done, from neglect, abuse and lack of
maintenance when it needed to "have" been done in the past.
Kind of funny in a way, some reading this will think it is a good deal.
yet others will say it too much for this old of a truck, no way I would spend that much, then spend
$100K on a new truck.
A guy I know said he had 1 or 2 more payments and the truck is his. Has been making payments for
the past 11 years, and thought he got a good deal for $58K. Its a Chevy or GMC Diesel. Wonder what
he really paid for it?
Back in 58, I was in the 8th grade, and I remember at Courtesy Chevrolet in San Jose, you could buy a
58 Chevy 1/2 ton, Step Side, 6 Cyl, 3 on the tree for $1800. That same truck today, (55 - 59 body) rusty
and beat up will sell for $5K on up, for just the body. An original owner, always garaged can go upwards
of $25K.
So guys hold on to your low mileage Garage Queens.

Only 199,922 to go for 500K........but 800K? I don`t think so.
As well as she runs now, I can see hitting 400K

On Edit: I take that back, can't remember now, but he must have replaced his timing chain, a normal wear item good for about 80,000.

Depends on the engine, OTR engines are designed for that, IDIs were designed to go 250k without major maintainence. A 40 or 50 series john deere tractor calls for an engine overhaul at 8k hours, we had a couple with over 20k. Just depends on the engine, maintainence, and how it was used.

Seems like you could for sure. Long time back a guy I worked with had an old Chevy. It was either a 350 or earlier, 283? He got right at 250,000 miles out of the engine with no internal work. A well maintained diesel should double that IMO.

She looked to have been rode hard and put up wet quite a few times.
One good thing about these IDI`s, is no timing Chain. Gear driven.
Learned about broken chain on my 85 300 Turbo Diesel Mercedes back on 07.
bearing in vac pump drops some *****, it takes out the chain. Learned that 42
miles east of Winnemucca, Nv I-80 west bound 8:30am. That was exciting.
