Good afternoon, I have a stock 08 extended cab shortbed 5.4 4x4 with a cat back. Stock wheel/tire combo and am looking for opinions on the best tuner to give the old girl a little more pep. I tow and plow snow. Not overly concerned about the mileage as it's pretty bad already. Thanks!!
I disagree but okay. I have driven trucks that are completely stock but with a tuner and they are definitely more responsive than mine is. Changed shift points and a slightly more responsive accelerator would be great. The truck works fine but just seems sluggish when accelerating.
IMO, the best tuner for the gas engines is 5 Star tuning. They have proven tunes that work for many applications. They have eco, performance and tow tunes in different octane levels. They can/will customize the tunes to your liking as well. Good luck.
Again, none of the n/a 5.4s respond to tuning well. The only benefit, if any, is the transmission tuning.
I know this from experience with several 5.4 and V10 trucks. There really isn't much there to be had considering the price of the tuner vs. what you get.
To gain any noticeable difference, you would have to run the 93 octane tune IMO. To me the cost is not worth the return. The difference would be in what everyone else is saying on the trans shifting. We all drive big, heavy bricks. I personally am running 5 Stars 87 octane tune in my '11 F250 6.2. I looked for just a bit more on the bottom end, trans tuning, and getting rid of that DBW lag. The bigger gain for me would be like yours. Run the 93 octane tune. I do no think I would see any huge gains maybe 20-25 HP?
