I have a ’96 Bronco with a 351W which has a miss at idle. The engine will be idling smooth for around 5 to 10 seconds and then miss and return to smooth idle for another 5 to 10 seconds. This only occurs at idle and runs smooth all of the rest of the time and throttle position. I have changed the fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil and air filter. I took it to a local shop and they put it on their computer and there were no error codes, although the front most O2 sensor was a little on the lean side, but within limits. Anyone have any ideas?
Misses only for an instance? In an effort to maximize fuel economy a lot of ECM,s run the engine as lean as possible while idling. Lean to the point of occasional misfire. If lite not coming on in dash, runs ok the rest of the time, and never dies at idle I wouldnt worry about it.
Thanks all for the responses. The Bronco is actually for my soon to be 16 year old son (one helluva lot better than the '59 F100 I had saved up my lawn mowing money for when I was 16!!) and has 60,500 miles. If you put it in neutral and rev it up and hold it at 1,000 rpm the infrequent miss goes away. Can one of those Supertuners (or something like it...) be used to alleviate this and to also help out performance a little? Can the ECM be tricked some way? Would larger throttle bodies be any help?
