im looking at 14, 15 and 16 lariat screw 250/350 with a 6.2.... sounds like these are pretty solid trucks, but it got me thinking... is there any major differences with the 6.2 gas trucks from 11 - 16? Any years to avoid or aim for?
i started out looking at 17+ trucks, but at 12k mikes a year I’m having trouble justifying the aluminum vintage trucks. Thanks for any input or advice.
I can’t speak to the MY differences, but I would say with the mileage you said I assume this is primarily a tow vehicle. We went with the 3.73 because we only have 1 vehicle so this is the wife’s DD, and while the mileage is surprisingly just as good as the eco boost F150 it replaced below 65 mph, it’s a dog pulling our 2 horse GN trailer (rated 13k, rarely has more than 11k in it). I would give preference to the 4.30 gears if you can find one over the year. Mileage and condition being equal.
The gas shift strategy changed between 11 and 13, I can say that because I've had both... the 11 wanted to be in 6 with the TCC locked at 40 whereas the 13 does not shift to 6th until 45. The 13 and newer trucks have 14.28" brakes which is larger than the 12 and older.
the 17+ do have more torque and lower in the rpm range. the 250s also get a more efficient trans. the only thing i would change on my 16 is the gears, which will be done soon, and going with the 350 for the higher ratings. i have no issues towing my 34 ft camper with the truck. we were just in Gettysburg about 1.5 hours drive. averaged 8.0 mpg with cruise set at 65.
are there any years to stay away from? All the things I read are pretty good on these trucks.
One wirh 4.30 gears will be very hard to find unless someone ordered one that way like I did, mine is primarily a RV tow truck so I wanted the 4.30s. From what I compared with guys or gals with 3.73 the mileage is about the same between 3.73 and the 4.30s.
I don't know of any major problems on in any of the years you are looking at, the 6.2 with the 6 speed has been a reliable combination.
I believe that from 2012-2015, the gas engine trucks got the same transmission as the Diesel trucks, and in 2016, the gas engine trucks got a slightly lighter-duty variant of the transmission. I have the 4.30 gears, and typical unladen fuel mileage is in the 12.5 mpg range for mixed highway/city driving. The 6.2 with the 4.30 gears does a great job of hauling my ~8000-8500 pound fifth wheel around the Colorado mountains.
