Oil burning?

Just got back from our 5000 mile camping trip last week, and changed the oil. Since the truck never gets a lot of miles except towing, I never have a real clear baseline to judge oil consumption. This time seemed worse. When we got home, I noticed that the oil barely registered on the dipstick, and after draining it didn't even fill a 5 quart jug. Maybe like 4 1/2? But it still did register on the dipstick, so I'm concerned that isn't accurate. I use Mobil 1 5W20 high mileage. Engine has 190,000 miles on it, 2002 6.8. No smoke at any time, no leaks, no noises. I've read this is probably normal, and heavy towing (~10,000 lb. TT) about 4500 of those 5000 miles didn't help it I'm sure. I've never been one to use additives in my oil, but would a different grade / brand cut down on the oil consumption? I mean, I'm not real concerned about it, I've owned big blocks that have been set up 'loose' that take a quart in 500 miles and ran great, but if there's something out there that works better for oil I'm game to try it.

In SC and run 5W30 Semi-Synth year round now. At about 180K tried full Synthetic but consumption was up and weeps I never had before started showing up. At 206,500 I'm probably using a quart every 1,500 miles. No smoke or drips on the driveway. Still pulls 9K+ TT fine accelerating and cruising interstate.
PCV Valve and Hoses are fresh.

Man what a testimony to the ruggedness of the cast iron 6.8. Folks complaining that their 200,000 mile engines are using a little oil now. Mind you these engines are gainfully deployed doing what they were designed to do. The legacy of the legendary side-oiler FE engine.

It is an awesome engine. Does everything it's ever been asked to do. I've never gotten the impression that I'm pushing it past its limits. Just wish it would have come with a better transmission. Maybe the new Godzilla is its legacy.
