Hi all,
When I bought my '95 F-150 SuperCab XLT 4x4 the A/C Compressor was in the back seat and a idler pulley was in its place on the 5.0 under the hood. Being a cheap skate and focusing on getting the last two kids though College, I have waited three and a half years to finally get to fixing the A/C. I found an affordable 'kit' from RockAuto but I wanted to ask a few questions before I dive in to replacing things.
Since the A/C system was 'open' for so long with the Compressor removed and only a couple of small plastic bags zip tied to the ends of the connections to the compressor, I decided it was best to replace the Compressor, the Receiver Drier/Accumulator, as well as the Condenser. The kit I bought also included the Refrigerant Oil, a new Orifice Tube, and all new O-Rings, Seals and Gaskets. Should I be replacing anything else? Do any of the lines need replacing?
I know I am missing a white vacuum line that goes from the upper left hand side of the engine compartment, where it leaves the canister that controls the blend door (I think)...I don't know where that is supposed to plug in to? And I am unsure how to remove and replace the Condenser, so if anyone has any advice, please pass it along. I am unsure if I can get to it from the grill side...and have to remove that...or if I have to remove the radiator to gain access from the backside.
My plan is to replace everything and then go to a professional to have it checked for leaks and filled. I am looking forward to having a fully function Defrost again, as well as a more comfortable drive down here in Dallas, TX. Thank you in advance.
As long as you are going that far, I would recommend you replace the manifold hose assembly so you have new hoses that won't leak.
where it leaves the canister that controls the blend door (I think)
It's not for the blend door, the blend door is cable operated. It's for the recirc door and that vac motor is all the way on the passenger side up against the firewall. It's visible from under the hood.
Yes you can get to the condensor from the grille side.
If I am not mistaken, you must pull the radiator to remove the condenser. The white vac line goes into the loom harness right near the HVAC box. I would recommend installing an-inline heater hose shut off operated by that vacuum line. It will drop the temperature inside cab by 10-20 deg. I think you can get the part from a 90's Ranger only $15 or so.
Thank you. I was able to get to the condenser from the front. Remove the grill and then the top two corner radiator bolts to loosen and push back will just give you enough room to remove and re install the condenser. I found that the Manifold hose assembly had been damaged while sitting and bouncing for so long, so I ordered a new one of those... Awaiting parts to finis the job.
So, I am stuck. I can't seem to get the connection separated where the orifice tube goes. It looks just like a Ford gas line connection but no matter what size I try, I can't get the thing to disconnect. I sprayed a cleaner, de greaser, oil up the connection and will let it sit for the night. Any suggestions?
