Hi all. On my newer to me '95 F150, 5.0 the previous owner pulled a bad a/c compressor and replaced it with an idler pulley. The compressor was under the back seat. I'd like to fix the a/c as it gets pretty hot in Dallas in the Summer. What should I be checking in addition to replacing the compressor? WIll I need to replace anything else since the system has been 'open' for that long? I know the compressor has been off for at least a year, but all the hoses and such appear to still be there.
Thanks.
It all dependeds on why the compressor was removed. Was it locked up? If it was the lines could be flushed out or replaced and the condenser should be flushed. The accumulator/receiver dryer needs to be replaced as well as the orifice tube. I suppose at some point you need to check the switches and make sure you get power to the compressor plug.
If it has been open for over a year I would be safe and flush the whole system with AC flush and replace all the O Rings. Visually inspect the condenser and if it has lots of flattened fins or any dark/oily spots replace it. Last thing you want to do is charge it only to find a leak. Also, dryer and orifice tube should definitely be replaced with compressor, along with the proper weight and amount of PAG oil. Many parts stores will not honor the warranty on the AC compressor if the related parts (dryer, tube, oil) are not purchased with it.
