My struts are shot on my '08 SCrew 4x4 and I decided to go with the Rancho adjustables. I have a 2" lift with a puck and these have a 2" lift so I can remove the puck on install.
However I have encountered two problems:
1. I don't have a socket for the lower nut. The head of the bolt is a 27mm, that I have. Anyone know what size deep socket I need for the nut?
2. Didn't realize I needed over 300 ftlbs of torque for the nut. I don't have air tools and my torque wrench only goes up to 150 ftlbs.
Can I rent/borrow that tool from a parts store?
Should I purchase the tool which will get little use?
Can I even muscle the nut off? Hadn't worked with this torque before. I gotta get a compressor....
Or take it all to a local mech to do the work?
It's a 29 mm, or a 1 3/16" deep well, which can be hard to find. You should be able to buy the single socket at most auto parts stores, or easily online. To get the nut off, 1/2" breaker bar should be enough. Use a cheater bar and you shouldn't have any problems. No need for any expensive impacts, a battery impact probably wouldn't have the juice anyway, unless you get a super expensive one. I haven't taken one off an F150 but have on many other vehicles with relatively little trouble.
As for the torque, a dab of locktite and crank it down as hard as you can with a breaker bar (not cheater bar). That should get you in the 200-250 ft-lbs range, which is plenty. Buying a torque wrench that reads up to 300 ft-lbs will be expensive.
Thanks for the input! I didn't see either of those sizes at the auto parts store.
It took me years to get into Youtube where there is a plethora of information...
and I still have not gotten into Amazon as yet. I rarely think to look there, but looks like thats where I am going.
if your going to only use it once and maybe never again i'd get one from harbor freight if there is one in your area. ive had bad luck with power tools from them but hand tools are pretty well made for the price
