Engine Idled
I had an exhaust repair done last week where the tail pipe separated from the catalytic converter because the 3 bolts broke at the flange. When driving home I got the message Exhaust Fluid System Fault and after 50 miles of driving I got Speed limited to 50mph. On next restart I got Engine Idled Soon. Now when I turn on the key it says Engine Idled. Luckily I made it home before that so the truck is in my driveway. I have not tried to drive it since. I get 2 codes from the truck P229E and P22A2. I assume that means that the NOx sensor was damaged during the repair. I looked it over and there is no visible damage and all wires look good. So what are my next steps? I can’t get an appointment at the Ford dealership until Aug 10th. Also is the truck drivable at this point? I have seen conflicting info some saying it’s not and I saw something from a ford website that said it can be overridden by selecting ok. I also put a wrench on the sensor but it wouldn’t budge.

I had one of my NoX sensors that was loose after the dealership replaced the exhaust system. I don't recall whether it was the front (NoX11)or rear (NoX12)sensor, but your code points to the rear one. Did you look closely at the wiring harness and plug to the rear sensor too?

Found this. Does anyone know if I will be able to drive the truck to the dealership or am I going to need to have it towed?

I know I'm talking to myself, but this may help someone else in the future. The truck was limited and there is no override. So once you see engine idled, which came one restart after being limited to 50moh, you are screwed. It has full power 0-1mph and then nothing. So I was able to idle along and put a boat in the water. But as for getting it to the dealership, looks like it will need a tow... I know others have said this but it's really ridiculous that they limit an otherwise perfect running truck because a simple sensor. Can't they just over inject DEF in this case if they are so worried about the emissions? Really makes me think my next truck will be a gas motor. Someone needs to figure out a way to bypass the sensor to get the truck to be drivable.

I believe that the 2017+, and maybe some of the 2011-2016, have updated programming that won't cause the truck to fail over into limp mode. I had a NOx sensor go bad in my truck and it never went into limp mode, even after quite a few restarts.

I saw an 18 get towed in to the dealer with a plugged dpf. The service guy said it went into idle mode and had to be towed. Service guy later told me the filter was at 250ish % full. 😬 Fleet truck. Dealer couldn’t get the IDS regen to work and it was a full replacement. Ouch.

With these new diesels and these emissions you have to take these trucks out and run them. They don't like stop and go driving at all. I bet no that they require big trucks and other equipment ho have this emissions crap that they too are having problems. I believe some companies are turning to smaller trucks with gas motors. I tow with my truck but since the virus and shut downs i haven't towed my rv anywhere. I avoid short trips as much as possible. I am not sure why some guys buy a diesel in the first place. Only reason for me was my RV. Otherwise I would have gotten a F150 V8. Maybe the Raptor.
I have found that if there is a DEF problem that you can't clear it no matter what you do. I don't have a tuner but if you do you may be able to clear them. I would defiantly call around to another dealer and see if you can get the truck in for repair sooner.
