Abandoned Car

A previous Tennant of mine, who left owing 3 months rent, also left an abandoned car in the garage. The car appears to be in disrepair, however, I haven't really had time to mess with it. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get rid of it, I obviously don't have the title. Optimally, I would like to find a way to get the owner to remove the car at their expense. Any suggestions?????

Don't know if there is a legal way to do this (you'd really want to CYA), but you should find out if you can (legally) part it out to get your rent money back....

pull the plates off it in the middle of the night, and push it into the street. park it crooked and on a curb near a fire hydrant if you can, the city will come and get it.

If you know where they are living now, deliver it to their new address. There are no laws against returning someones property.

The law here is :
After ONE fiscal year, it becomes the property of the property owner the vehicle it is parked on.

Then it becomes an Abandoned Vehicle.

Go to the DMV and talk to someone there.
I think if it sits there long enuff you can have the title tranferred to your name.

If it is still tagged in their name, call a tow truck and tell them to bill to the people at their new address which I assume you don;t have, but as a landlord you can get it from the public records office.

here in colorado if a car is left on your property for 3 months minimum, you can have the title transferred to your name, but theres a process you have to go through, my mother had to do this to get the title for her 87 trans am (cant believe somebody would abandon this car!) I also had to go through a similar process for my falcon, but it wasn't abandoned.

Keep it, you can charge storage fees on the vehicle. Then when you end up suing the person for the rent they owe you and for storage on the car. The judge can also order the removal of the car at their expense.

Suing people is whats wrong with this society it's not worth all that mess for a measly abandoned car , if you can get the renter to remove it I would do that. I had a similar situation happen on my property. I moved it to a public road, and it was hauled away, it may of not been the best thing to do.. But it worked.

push it off a cliff and watch it crash... lol , probably not the "smart" thing to do, but probably really cool to watch and will ease your nerves after those people screwin you over, kinda like payback? haha

File a judgement against them for the rent and for having to remove the car. Then attach that lien to their credit. In GA it costs about $100 total to do that.

If you don't want the car and it's in the way - call a tow truck company and ask them to remove it. Many tow truck companies are in the business of removing abandoned cars. They know what paperwork is required to give the owner 2 options: Pay for towing and storage to get the car back, or release title. If the owners refuse to acknowledge or can't be found, then it is truly an abandoned car and after a certain amount of time the towing company can gain title and sell.
Don't try and get in the middle. Just get the place cleaned up and rented out. Let the tow company do it's job - it shouldn't cost you anything. At the minimum the tower will make a hundred from some wrecking yard they do business with.

Cool

I'm surprised that no one has asked what type of vehicle it is, may be it is a classic Ford truck that he could part out to regain some of his rent money?
