Don't expect the towing to be free. Since 9/11 the price of scrap metal has been way down. I won't take a small scrapper for free. Without keys, you'll need some help moving it. I'd say, check the local laws to find the least complicated way to dispose of the heap. P.S. Getting busted for "littering a highway" also applies to the dumping of a dilapidated motor vehicle!

It's a 2004 Superduty, 4x4, Diesel, crewcab.......... (just kidding). Actually it's a little foreign car. I'm sure there are problems with it or the Tenant would have taken it with them. It has a flat tire and I think the battery is missing. We already got our judgment (worthless) and possession of property back. I just didn't want to spend another nickel on this Tenant. I have had people leave that owed money before, but this one also vandalized the inside of the place. That's why I don't want to let them off the hook to easily on this abandoned car.

I like the push the car out and leave it in a no-parking zone idea. Just don't leave it in front of a fire hydrant. God forbid there is a fire and that hydrant is blocked!

The problem is the property is on a busy street with no curbside parking.

Have you tried calling the local police non-emergency line and asking what your options are to get rid of an abandoned vehicle that was left on your property?

If this Tenant was that bad, trashing the place etc.,you really should take legal action. Things like damages, lost rental income, legal and court costs are the most important things to sue that person for. This, by the way, doesn't just come from any discontent with my present situation. I was a landlord to three different couples in two different houses before. You, as a landlord, are bound by the law. Well, SO IS THE TENANT!. You have been wronged. Call your lawyer.

If you want to have it towed away, call someone that takes donated cars for free and then repairs them, parts them out. Someplace like www.boatsforcancer.com can help. You can write it off as a tax donation. I have done it on cars that I used for parts and didn't want to deal with parting the rest out. I had the titles, so here is the disclaimer....

Make sure that the car is legally yours before doing this. You can probably file a lien on it and have a court order judgement to you. IE, if they owe you $600, and the car is worth $600, the court might give you the car. I'm not saying to sue, filing a lien is totally different. Usually, around here, if they leave and owe you rent, whatever is left behind is yours. I got a nice Movado watch out of a similar deal after we evicted tenants.

Just say the car is worth what you are owed in rent(or more whichever is true) and take the tax credit.

I just talked to a tow service. They said to have the police come out and check the vin# and tags to make sure it's not a stolen car. After that, they will tow it off the property. If it's 1994 or newer, the tow is free. If it's older than 1994, it will cost $65.00. I think this may be my best alternative. My opinion is the car is not worth much so it isn't going to be worth trying to sell.

alot of places around here take any cars as long as they are not stripped for parts and basically "shells". Then they charge 25 bucks if they are stripped and take it away. Otherwise the tow is free.

The car needs not to have keys or a title, they just come get it. One time, I parked my 90 GTI jetta across the street of my girlfriends house over a week that we went to california. The cops had the car towed because the neighbor claimed it was an abandoned vehicle. Boy was I pissed, I thought someone stole the car. It sat for 7 days in the street, parked legally.

Call the tow company and tell them you have an abandoned vehicle.

Down here most salvage yards have their own means of picking up abandoned or unwanted vehicles. They don't charge anything since it's going to their You-Pick graveyard where they'll make $$'s on the parts.

Yeah, most of the junkyards around here haul off junk cars for free too.

I got a riding lawnmower from a rental lien last year, put $50 in getting it running right, and just sold it last week for $200.

Donate it to a non-profit, most of the time you don't need the title.

I went over and looked through the car today. It appears to be a 1984 Honda. It's a 4 door, blue, one flat tire. The key is in it but won't start. On a positive note, there was a perfectly good lawn sprinkler in the trunk. $10 down, $2,390 to go!!!
