So ive had an odd "driveline" vibration since putting in an aod in place of c4, and 8.8 in place of the 8". The C4 had a long weight hung off the tailshaft, and the 8.8 had a large round weight bolted to the snout. Currently, there are no weights. Do these serve a meaningful purpose? Theres no way to attatch it to the AOD, and i took it off the 8.8 to save weight, and also because im not sure it will clear.
Those hanging weights are dampeners, like the rotational harmonic dampener on the front of your engine. They consist of a weight attached through a rubber layer to the bracket that bolts to the tail housing, intended to dampen certain harmonic vibrations.
I also removed the hanging weight on my 8.8" diff for a suspension mod, and if my transmission generates a particular vibration, it can resonate for a few seconds. This only happened when the rear main seal on the engine was leaking, and oil got onto the clutch. It got to a point where it was impossible to smoothly engage the clutch, and the
resulting vibrations would shake the whole car for a few seconds even after engagement. Now with a new clutch that engages smoothly, the resonance happens only when I release is the wrong way.
