Floor mat

When I first got my truck about 20 years ago, I started gathering parts that I knew I would need to get this truck back together. One thing. I got was a NOS floor mat. I took it out of the box last year to lay it out flat and get the creases out. It was fine at that time and I let it lay flat in the top of my barn until this spring. When I went to put it in, it started cracking badly on the folds. So I purchased a brand new one, but they new one doesn’t come with a jute backing. I saved the backing from the defective one, but how should I glue it? I was thinking of using spray adhesive like what I have used to replace modern headliner fabric, but not sure if that will work good enough. I installed insulation/sound deadener on the floor already, so I’m not sure I even need the jute backing. It may help the floor mat lay better with the jute.
This is a lot of explanation for the simple question glueing the jute backing.

You might check with an upholstery supplier near you. I generally use this for doing upholstery on car audio pieces I build.

Heat does not affect it and once it is bonded, there is no undoing it. I used to get it locally for $35 a gallon, quart is cheaper just don't remember the price. You can either spray or brush it though brushing will use more. The $11 HVLP gun from harbor freight will spray it just fine and you can pitch it when done if you didn't want to clean it.

I have used this in a pinch from walmart. I had decent results with it, but have seen it lift eventually. Same rules on application.

I would not buy a NOS floor mat unless the seller took it out of the box and laid it flat...then took pics of it

These mats came tightly rolled up in a box, changes in temperature over the years caused them to crack, so once they're unrolled...what you get is dozens of pieces of cracked rubber.

I know that now, too bad I didn’t consult you before I bought it. Actually, it didn’t help that I stored it in the barn, in the box, for years before I was ready for it.

I wonder if it would roll on with a throw away roller. I know when I did laminate countertops, I just rolled on the contact cement.

It may. I usually just grab a couple of the $1 chip brushes and throw them away if I am not going to spray. The roller may or may not work well on the jute like it does on a hard surface.

I ended up using some spray contact adhesive, only because I had it here at the house from a few years ago. It is called Sticky Stuff, I forget what company I bought it from. The spray pattern was wide and it actually worked quite well. I think it will stay just fine, but it really doesn’t need to once it’s in place.

I figured, I may as well give it a try, if it didn’t work out, I’d go with the good stuff.

I would have done the same. True that you won't need it really after install. How did it come out?

It came out fair, the mat was somewhat wrinkled right out of the box. Of course, there is really no good way to get it to lay good without putting in the truck. The mat was about 1/2” long, so I trimmed it on the passenger side. Hopefully after it’s in there a while everything will look good enough. I still have to recondition the step-well trim and install that. The trim isn’t all that great, but I don’t want to shell out for new right now. The wrinkle is right around the hump area.

Thanks for the information. I guess I need to check on my two nos floormats to make sure they aren't cracking from storage as well. I last checked them over a year ago. At least I'm not too far in the hole if they are bad as I only have 25 dollars in them. Here is a picture of one of them that sadly has a small hole chewed in it from a mouse nest about two years ago in the right corner almost under the seat but the rest of the mat was perfect.

That stinks, the mat isn’t going to be much good with a big hole on it. Hopefully the other is still in good enough condition
