Need some help

Hey all,

Starting a new project and have chosen a first gen ranger in the early 90's. right now the decision is based on the look of the square body style. The plan for now is to get a good engine set up and get er low to the ground.
Im looking to fit a 3.5 in there or a Cummins 4BT. My question is has anyone transplanted a bigger engine than stock or build of the stock platform. If ya did, what were you specs (engine,hp etc) want to drop something in that is basically bolt in. I want to do minimal frame work.

Any help or direction to look is appreciated as I'm not to familiar with the ranger series on what can be done. Lots of experience with the f150 and the 6.4's but getting a lil out of my realm here.

The day after the Ranger was introduced, plans were being made to put the 302 in one. And shortly after that, lots and lots of folks did just that.

A 302 fits in there easily, and there is lots of support for it.

A 3.5? Which one?

A 4BT would be a poor choice, weighing in the neighborhood of 750 lbs. vs a Ranger V6 coming in at about 300 lbs. It would be a real pig to drive, front end parts would break dramatically at inopportune times & it would be slow and buzzy.

A couple fellows here have put Ford 429s in them as well. Still lighter than the 4BT and slightly more powerful....

The most common and straight forward engine swap in the Ranger is a 302 out of an Explorer. Explorers are abundant, buy a rolled Explorer as this will give you the bulk of the parts you need but in particular you will get all the electrical/emissions parts which will make your engine swap go much smoother than if you don't. You will find tons of info online RE needed parts, all of which are easily sourced. You did say, basically bolt in and minimal frame work, right?
