No, it does not extend like a normal wheel shock. I had to use a short pickle fork and air chisel to remove it. I put Bilstein 4600 series on each corner earlier this year on my '17 and those plus the stabilizer have improved the ride greatly. The old shocks were pretty much dead at 28k miles.
