Horn Problems

I Have a nice 68 F-100 that I've been working on for a few years. My latest task is fixing the horn. So far I've applied 12 volts to the horn and determined that the does work ,replaced the horn relay and traced the wiring back to the center mounted cap on the steering wheel. I've taken it off and that's where I'm getting confused, I know there's supposed to be a brass button with a spring and a contact installed somewhere in there but I can't find a good diagram of where it is and how to install it. I found a series of pic's on this site but they are on a 66 and I think this 68 is slightly different. One thing I saw right away was the 66 has a large spring behind the cap and mine has either has none or it's missing. I'd appreciate any info on this I always like to know what to do before I start taking things apart.

This might help. The part in question is 13A821 in the diagram, enlarged for visibility, top center of the page:

horn problems

Thanks for the info...so when I'm looking at the steering column with the center cap removed I see what looks like a piece of 1/4 in. pipe sticking up at about the 7 o'clock position, Is this where the part is inserted or do I have to remove the nut and the 13A811 plate to get to the correct place.......also I've read that there's an insulator required and is in the 13A821 kit, where can I buy the parts?

I used a spring from a ball point pen.

Yes, that's where it goes. I would recommend going to Dennis Carpenter or MAC's and ordering a horn kit.

Here are a couple of FTE threads dealing with your issue:

13A821 is the horn brush, 13A822 is its insulator. Both fit into a hole on the outside of the steering wheel at 7 o'clock.

The brush contains a thin copper wire attached to a coil spring. The wire breaks, horn no longer blows.

Horn Button Ring Contact Location

There must be a lot of different variations used in these older trucks. I tried to pry the retainer plate (13A811) but it is spot welded to the steering wheel so I pulled the wheel I found the location of the contact button which looks like it's a part of the plastic turn signal assembly and is located at about the 1 O'clock position with the tube that holds the button lined up with the steel ring on the steering wheel and has the correct blue /yellow stripe wire connection at its base......I put a copper wire down the tube, grounded it and the horn blew. I don't know if this is something that was added but it looks original

See the black star next to 13A811 in the pic? This means it wasn't serviced, was only available with the steering wheel and it does not come off.

There is a horn brush and insulator located on the outside of the steering wheel on all 1961/70 trucks w/the 17" 3 spoke steering wheel.

I want to thank and update everyone who gave me information on this problem. I ordered the horn brush kit from a reputable supplier for a total price of 15 dollars but when I received it I found what now seems to be the usual information on the package that indicates it will be less than high quality..."Made in China" I installed it, tested it and it worked for less than 6 operations. The spring appeared to be of a very poor quality as after a few compressions it would not expand and "spring' back. Fortunately I had ordered it through Amazon so I returned it, went to Walmart and bought a 6 dollar horn button connected the blue/yellow wire and ground and it works just fine.
