Horn Confusion

I'm confused about how the horn works inside the steering column. If I ground out the small spring loaded piece in the steering column and push it in the horn sounds, but the steering column doesn't ground out that part. Here are some pictures. Am I missing a part or something?

if i ground this with a screwdriver and push it in the horn blows.

the back of the horn ring doesn't have anything that grounds it out, though.

Underneath the horn ring nylon retainer is the rubber horn ring blowing pad (C0DZ-13A813-A).

Overtime, it tends to flatten out and/or disintegrate.

Horn brush and insulator (C2OZ-13A821-A) fits into a hole on the outside of the steering wheel. The brush has a thin copper wire that snaps.

There's a large coil spring between the horn ring and the wheel. The horn ring spring (C0DZ-13A807-B) is different than horn button spring (C0DF-13A807-B).

Thanks Bill. I bought a new horn button contact (finger pointing at it). I have the large coil spring between the ring and the wheel (you can see it in the second picture). so you say there is another spring (horn button spring)? And I don't have anything like the rubber horn ring blowing pad (funny name). do you have a diagram?

I'm sorry if i'm not getting this. My big problem is I don't know how the ground gets to the relay through the contacts. I have the contact under the steering wheel, and I know it works because if I pull off the wheel and ground out the contact the horn blows. With the wheel installed, if i ground out the contact that goes in the little hole in the wheel (where my finger points in the first picture) and push it in then the horn blows also. It just seems like I'm missing something. What does the rubber horn ring blowing pad do? Since it's rubber it can't connect the ground. How does the ground get initiated?

There is only one spring, but the horn ring spring is different than the horn button spring.

Take the nylon retainer off the horn ring, then remove the backing plate and you'll see the horn blowing pad below it.

If the pad is missing, the horn won't blow.

Pic in error shows pad (13A813) with horn button, but it was only used with a horn ring. 13A808 is the plate, 13A809 is the nylon retainer.

The 3 screws that attach the 13A809 horn ring retainer pass thru the 13A808 plate. Behind this plate is the 13A813 horn ring pad.

I don't see the plate or the horn pad in the pic in post 1.

Yesterday repaired horn; in addition to another issue where the steering shaft retainer was binding on the steering column, likely due to recent replaced the rag joint?

It's a good sign, the horn operates by jumping from the horn brush to the steering shaft and as member's mentioned, appears issue is either missing or faulty component and/or poor ground?

In my case, the hot wire runs thru the column to the turn signal switch where a horn brush sets and rides on the metal sleeve on the backside of the steering wheel. There's another horn brush that sets inside an insulator sleeve on the face of the steering wheel that rides on the horn button assembly, in my case, both horn brushes are interchangeable and since they are so flimsy I pick up a spare. Found if I tighten the horn button/ring and not allow for some flexibility the horn would not complete the circuit to ground?? Fortunately, I have the correct steering wheel puller so I removed and cleaned the metal ring on the backside of the steering wheel, figure the less residual corrosion should provide for a more effective circuit.
Anyhow, food for thought?

dave, thanks for the input. my problem is that the second horn brush you mentioned (inside the insulator sleeve on the face of the steering wheel) never contacts any metal because I'm missing that part.

thanks to everyone who responded.
