Weight distribution hitch

2019 F-250 without camper package. Just picked up a 27’ Starcraft travel trailer which supposedly weighs 6500 dry with a dry tongue weight of 650. 2200lb capacity so rough estimate of 8000lbs wet with a wet tongue weight of 800lbs. I pack light and again these are estimates. I have airlift 5500 bags which I know don’t help with the front axle being weighted, but will help with the inevitable sag on a leveled truck. I assume I will want a weight distribution hitch to help add weight back onto the front axle as well as prevent sway. Can anyone recommend a specific hitch? I’ve googled and watched YouTube at length and still find no real reason to pick one over the other. I know I’d like the weigh safe true two because it’s a clean and slick looking hitch but at $999 when most others are $500-600...it’s a hard sale when I still need to buy a generator. Thanks in advance for any recommendations...

I went with an Andersen W/D and sway control hitch. I have a 250 and my trailer weighs 7k lbs max. It does tow it pretty well without weight distribution but, like you, I wanted to put some more weight on the front axle and have some sway control. It's a light weight setup, I don't think it transfers weight as well as a spring bar setup but it does well enough for what I was looking for. My main reason for going with Andersen was I had a lot of crap on the tongue of the trailer so mounting the spring bars wasn't working without a lot of relocation. So far, the Andersen Hitch has been working well.

I use an Equal-i-zer WDH, works great, you'll get lots of opinions here. The tongue weight factory spec on my trailer was 815 lbs. The actual cat scale weight was 1100 lbs. (1250 lbs trailer loaded and set for travel). I purchased the spring bars based on the cat scale weight, more for sway control than weight distribution. I set up the WDH based on actual cat scale weights. 8500 lb trailer tows like a dream.

I have the Andersen WDH. Works great for my setup.

I use the Blue Ox WDH. Has worked fine for us. Tow with about 1000 lbs. of hitch weight from our 28' Airstream.

We have the Equalizer setup on our trailer, 9500 wet. It does a great job.

Weight distribution hitch

I know this is not the marketplace, but I bought an Equal-i-zer WD hitch rated for up to 1,100# hitch weight for my travel trailer, then ended up buying a 5th wheel. Still new in box.

Bought it from etrailer.com. I'm getting ready to put it on Craigslist for a great price. Live in VA, deliver reasonable distance, too heavy to ship.

Your review of the Andersen Hitch was very helpful in my finally opting to purchase one. I found a good deal at Parley's Diesel. They had a 10% off code on their main page so I picked up my hitch for under $500 shipped to my door. Also opted for the 2.5" shank so I didn't have to deal with reducer sleeves.

You might run it without WDH first and see how it goes, I have a horse trailer that has 1500# on the tongue that I pull with the wife's '19 F350 and there is no issue at all. I have run an EAZ-lift on my RV for years and it has been just fine.

I was in the same boat, got the Andersen, and love it.

Great info. I’ll look up the mentioned hitches and will most likely end up towing it home without one. Thank you.

I also am also running the Anderson on my cargo trailer and happy with it. Big plus is how little room it takes up when removed when not using it. One thing I will point out if running in lots of dust need to periodically pull apart and clean the plastic cup area to keep from making a popping noise when turning hard, but not a big deal in my opinion.

I tow my 10,000 lb boat trailer, 800 lbs on the hitch, I towed it with my 2012 F250 with air bags, ran 30 psi in the bags, now tow it with my 2020 F350 with airbags, abou t the same air pressure, never felt any need for an equalizer, the truck sat level, drove great with the trailer. Have put 25k miles on it so far. As was suggested, try it without first, a lot easier if you don’t need it.
