Botched tuner install

So I just purchased an '01 F350 with the 7.3 powerstroke that came with part of a DP F6 tuner. The digital switch & harness is there but the chip is gone. The guy I bought the truck from said he had a guy try to install it but they pulled it back out afterwards & threw it because the truck wouldn't run right & would shut down on him. Now I want to get another chip & install but I'm worried they might of fudged something up in the ECM doing the install before like scraping the pins too much or something. Is there anything that can be done to fix it if that was the case?

The type of people that would throw a rather expensive piece of electronics rather than figure out what's going on are also the type that would not follow directions and then blame the device rather than themselves when it didn't work right so I'd expect the problem to be the installer, not the components (including your truck/ECU). When I did the DF F6 install years ago it was super easy and worked exactly as expected.
