10-speed rough shift
There seems to be a number of different conditions that causes shift feel roughness to gear change.
Cold starts and down hill will/can invoke the hill retard function up to a certain speed then it will release and free up like brakes were let off. Seems to be a normal action. to get use to.
Depending on what shift mode selected, the up shift from 1 to 4 could be a bit rough or very smooth.
In default shift and sport mode, shifting will go through all the gears. 1 and 2 are very low with high rpm reached depending on amount of throttle applied. Here your normal expectation plays a part. The sequence can feel un natural but it's the way it has to work.
Put the shift mode in ENCO and the shift is quite different by missing gears such as going from 1 to 3 to 5 etc.
With 10 speeds to offer you, expect actions quite different than what you might expect from the past 3 speed over drive trucks.
With 10 speeds and high torque engines responses, would you really expect different feels from the various shift modes and throttle applications?
Throw in the computer learning process and you have a lot to catch up with.
Certainly it's hard to tell a malfunction out of all these operational combinations.
As far as overdrive gears, in the 10 sped, the gears 8,9 and 10 are Od gears.
You still have lock out capability but it does not work like the old 3 speed/Od trans that used a lockup converter and a big clutch band that should not be used for towing large gross weights.
In my 5L 10 speed, the shifting smooths out in the green Enco mode and results in improved fuel mileage by not running through all the gears needlessly and using a bit less foot and road speeds.
Re think what you do and what modes you use and see if you can rationalize the huge system operation you have available, learn how to use it and be happy it's not a 10 speed manual to deal with or you likely would/might never own the truck for that reason alone.
Also consider the rear axle ratio available. A 3:55 will seem to shift smoother than a truck with 3:73 due to the difference in amount of mechanical torque and engine combinations. For example a 3;73 1 to 2 shifts can be pretty sharp feeling.
Think about all this before making judgements with all the control at your command.
This is why your Owner manual is well over 500 pages. It's all in their. and model/equipage dependent to be a where of.
My 5L is a 14-second + quarter miler if I were drive it that way. Pretty quick for a stock unmodified truck.
Good luck.

i have a 2018 F-150, 3.5L Ecoboost. Currently the mileage is 33,700. At approximately 30,000 miles the rough shifting started. At first it was from 4 to 3, then it progressed to upshift at well. The dealership told me that the 10 speed is also used by GM and both Ford and GM are working on the issue. They ran the relearning to the adaptive program and the problem continued. So far, no solution and the problem for me is becoming more frequent. I have heard or seen no additional information and came back to the forums (was a F350 diesel owner before trading it in 2018) looking for more information.
ifi find more information I will let you know.
