Engine Code Help?
I think I have read every thread on this forum about engines and codes. I am still missing the answer on my engine. I was told that is was a 390 in the truck. After reading a lot of threads related to these things it appears that there is a lot of mystery as to the 390 360 facts. After using a decoder for the VIN it indicates that the truck left the factory in Michigan with a 360 2 barrel carb. It seems that the casting numbers most people ask for are the ones below the oil filter on the block. Mine are as a follows.............A large E with the 2k28 below it. Does anyone have any idea what motor I have? 360 or 390?
Thanks!
The 360 was designed for a Truck But they also had 390's in them.
This would constitute a T in the casting number of said part.
ie - D2TE-9425-A
The 390's were usually 4 bbl in Trucks.
The casting numbers you posted are only Date of the casting of that part, in your case (2k28) was October 28/1972.
The only way to tell the difference is to measure the stroke.
On the exterior they look alike.
The numbers you will find on the :
heads, Block (????-6015- ? ),Intake (????-9425-?) & exhaust manifolds.
If you find a A or an O as the 3rd digit, that engine was designed for a car but used in a truck also.
Pretty much rules out the factory motor question then. I believe I will discover it is a 390. Although I did the VIN decoder thing and according to that it left the plant with a 360? But, like so many of these trucks, the running gear has changed to many times to count in most cases.
