Hopefully not bad news....I ordered all the parts that I needed for a complete cooling system, including a Mishimoto radiator and tranny cooler, both of which already came in. For some reason, I went back to Mishimoto's website and to my dismay, in small print at the very bottom reads in part "May not be a direct fit for vehicles built before 12/08/1998 due to additional bracing." Well, mine was built in July, 1998. I sent an email asking if this is true since they did advertise that it fits 1999 7.3s and if there is a work around. I told them I would hate to have to return it. My question here, does anybody know if there is a work around? I am hoping since I am R&R the radiator that it will be possible to install the cooler. If this does not work, than do you think that a stock 6.0 tranny cooler will work, or will I have the same problem.
Thanks!
EDIT: I spoke with my Ford mechanic who will be doing the work and he said there should be no problem. It may not be a "drop in", but nothing that could not be done with a little extra work.

My Mishimoto radiator and tranny cooler came in and I don't want to take them out of their boxes for photos until ready to install which will be in a few weeks. These things are heavy at 41+ lbs and 20+ lbs (with their boxes) respectively.
I do have a question in regards to water pumps in which I have always used OEM parts (except for one time), but I came across a seller, Thoroughbred Diesel that lists an OEM waterpump for less than 1/2 of what I have found for a Motorcraft unit. I asked them about it and they responded that it is an OEM part. I want to believe them, but after having a very bad experience with an aftermarket water pump in the past, I am very hesitant to buy theirs. If they say it is an OEM, that to me would be a Motorcraft product, but I could be wrong. I would save over a hundred $$, which is not a big deal out of what I am spending on this project in which I am replacing almost every part associated with the cooling system, but still.....it is well over a hundred dollar savings! Here is a link: https://www.thoroughbreddiesel.com/wp73/
Thanks!
There are several companies out there that are an OEM for Ford. Ford doesn't build all of their own parts. Sometimes it is the exact part in a different box. But sometimes it is hard to tell. Did you try RockAuto? Sometimes they list "OEM Part" in the description and I have found it to be reliable.
I will add to this thread that I just replaced my radiator with the cheaper Mishimoto stock replacement with plastic tanks. I purchased from Summit Racing and it was direct shipped from Mishimoto. I looks great and installed super easy. It is not as fancy as the all aluminum version but I trust the brand over some of the even cheaper brands I see online.
My mechanic stopped by a few minutes ago to make sure I have all the parts needed and he took a look at the pump and said he could tell it was a high quality part. It is Motorcraft.
After installing the Mishimoto system, I took the truck towing a 13,000 toybox trailer on several trips in 115 degree weather and up to 6500 ft mountains last summer, the water temps never got over 115 while climbing at the lower hotter elevations and 195 while driving the desert flats. Very happy!
Now that it is winter, the problem I am having is even with a 203 thermostat, with ambient temps in the 60s to low 70's, it runs about 180 and am worried that is too low. How can I get the temp up higher? Maybe by using some sort of method to block the radiator? I thought the 203 thermostat would keep it around that temp except for maybe much lower ambient temps. Thanks for any suggestions.
Take the fan out. That's the only way I can get it to run at full operating temp in the winter. Otherwise around 180-190 oil temp is about all you'll get in colder weather under lightly loaded conditions. With the fan out it will run 210-215.
Front end on my truck has been wrecked bad enough to need the whole cooling stack replaced. I'm guessing they probably didn't use the OEM Ford radiator but it has been fine for 90k miles that I've owned the truck.
Don't mess with the Fan, do like the Big Boys do.....Either buy a Radiator Bra for the Grill that has zippered Vents in it. ( expensive), or cut out a chunk of cardboard or lightweight plastic, that you can slide in front of the radiator, make a short run, log your temps, and cut slits in the plate until you hit your desired Temps. (Much cheaper) install or remove as needed.
My mechanic said it must be a defective thermostat, so I looked at my invoice to see where it came from and it is a Mishimoto brand which has a lifetime warranty. I sent them a PM Friday and hopefully I will get a response after the weekend. Once I get the replacement, I will test it before installation and let you all know what happens.
