Yesterday I was driving my truck to the store and when I tried to put it in park the truck started rolling back and wouldn’t go into park, so I took it home and now the shifter has completely disconnected itself from the shifter linkage. But the odd thing is I can still change gears from under the hood with the shifter linkage but the truck won’t start regardless of it being in park or neutral, I’m stumped.

The NSS or neutral safety switch was on the column in '74, that's probably why it won't start even if the transmission is physically in park. As for where the linkage came apart, it might take 2 people to find the disconnect. One to operate the shift lever and one to see what does and doesn't move. Make sure the wheels are chocked and/or the parking brake is on. I've had my truck roll away from me a bit before the parking pawl caught and it's very startling to say the least.
