From time to time my collumn shifter will not go all the way into park when I slide it over. When I go to start it nothing will happen and I have to sort of jam the shifter over harder to get it to seat all they way so the starter will engage. I also have an issue where my reverse lights only work sometimes and I have to play with the shifter a bit to get them to come on. I have heard that the linkage may need adjustment, but I don't have the slightest clue how to adjust that. Anyone have any ideas what could cause this? Thanks.
I had the same problem with my 95 Bronco and it was getting worse and worse. It got to the point I couldn't get it into Park or First gear. I looked in the Haynes manual and they said there was a way to adjust the cable down near the transmission, but I never found the adjusting tab they reference. I follwed the cable up under the dash board and found just under the brake pedal area where the cable attaches to a plate that is attached by two torx screws to the end of part of the shift lever assembly. These two torx screw had almost fallen out. I tightned the two screws up and all the play came out of the linkage and now I can get it into Park and First, in fact the shifter feels brand new. I hope this helps.
Start By Adjusting The Neutral Safety Switch, Also Called Neutral Start Switch Which Is On The Side Of The Transmission. After That Is Properly Adjusted Then Adjust Your Shift Indicator, Most Likely Via A Cable On You Steering Column Near The Shift Lever And Under A Plastic Cover. Most Manuals Will Instruct You On How To Do This And Only A Few Tools Are Needed. Screwdriver, 1-2 Wrenches And A Drill Bit For A Guide Pin On The Switch.
Good Luck
