So my 2003 7.3L took a **** a week ago while driving. Lost power and was spitting oil all down the road. Couldn't get it to turn over again so I had it towed home. Here's what I did to try to fix the issue...
Replaced the IPR
Changed out the HPOP Hoses because I found that one had a hole blown out of it
Filled it back up with oil
Checked the fuel bowl to make sure there is fuel in the fuel bowl
Filled the HPOP reservoir up
Hooked up a battery charger to the batteries so I could keep cranking it over to try to get any air purged form the HPOP lines
Still no luck! Damn thing still won't turn over... Any other ideas on what to check on? It's not leaking oil anymore. One thing that my truck has had a problem with since I have owned it is the fuel sensor in the tank isnt always correct, it will just randomly say empty even though its full. The tank shows almost empty now but I know for a fact theres over 1/2 a tank. That shouldn't cause any of these issues right?
Thanks in advance and Happy 4th
** I forgot to mention, after I replaced the IPR, it started so I turned it off. Tried to start it again and blew a HPOP hose. Now it won’t start after replacing the hoses
You may have weak batteries if you have been cranking on it a while to. Takes a certain voltage on your batteries to fire these engines. You have Anyway to read what your HPOP pressures are?
that first diagram really helped. The Tach doesn’t move while cranking. Possible CPS? No Ford part stores open until Monday, does it need to be Motorcraft?

definitely does need to be motorcraft. Even different versions of the Motorcraft one don’t work right!! Horror stories otherwise. If you’re in a real bad spot and tying prevent a tow you could try one I guess but just know you may be urinating in the wind. You will definitely want to replace it with a Motorcraft immediately. Frankly I’m a little shocked I even said OK with that. Makes me nauseous..
do any of your friends have 7.3’s? Pretty much everyone I know thatbhas one of these vehicles seems to keep one in the glove box. It certainly good insurance.

I’m going to snag one from autozone and use it until Monday and then get a Motorcraft. I need the truck for work this weekend. Thanks for all of the help I’ll let you know if it works.
Did you see what sous wrote? Seems 2003 models don’t read the chart related to the tach. Sorry if I led you in the wrong direction. I’d still charge the batteries back up and try again and go from there. You may get lucky.

Just saw that. I think I’ll still pick one up to see if it fixes anything. If not, I’ll keep cranking lol. I’m not sure what else it could be.
Well, it’s not the CPS... lol. Just put in a new one. Guess I’ll continue cranking it tomorrow and hopefully it’ll turn over. I’m not sure what else to do? My ICP is unplugged while cranking as well
Really need to get a scanner on the OBDII port and read ICP and IPR duty cycle, and see if they are coming up into the normal range yet. If it ran before the HPOP hose blew, I would think getting the air purged is all that is needed to get 'er going.
I recommend the Forscan app on your phone and an OBDII bluetooth (android) or wifi (ios) dongle to read your codes and monitor engine parameters like ICP and IPR DC. See OBDII tools in my signature
