I have a borrowed trailer with a 4 pin plug. Owner has disconnected brake wire I assume just because he doesn't want to change plugs on his trucks. I don't want to rewire his trailer but would like to connect brake wire to my truck. Can I run the blue brake wire from the trailer to a 7 way plug by itself, plug it into my 7 way truck receptacle, and get it to work?

I am not sure I follow. I am sure you know you need the existing wires for lights and signals. The trailer brakes don't care if they are connected in a multi-wire cable or a single lead so as long as you have lights, you should also have a ground on the trailer to truck and you should have brakes by adding a lead. to the appropriate terminal in the seven pin, but I am not sure how you will keep it inserted.

I was thinking of just buying a 7 way plug and hooking the the blue brake wire and the white ground wire that owner unhooked to it, and plugging it in next to my 4 way that the lights are hooked to. I have a 7 and a 4 way on my truck

Got it. I know of no reason that will not work. Usually all the wires are in one cord, but one truck camper dealer I did some work for use to put the wires together there, I guess to save money although I thought all it did was make more work. Did the trailer originally have a seven pin and the trailer owner cut it off?
Probably. It has the standard 4 wire hooked up, and the white and blue are wrapped together and cut off up front by the tongue. He has a demolition business and several pickups. Probably was too cheap to put 7ways on the trucks so off went the wires..🙄
I really appreciate the reply - getting ready for a 3000 mile trip with it...

Pull the wheels and check / repack the bearings and make sure there are brakes he may have pulled the guts and why he cut the wires?

Just do a test pull, no need to pull things apart just to verify there are brakes. going to have to do that after hookup anyway. Repacking wheel bearings is another issue. My thoughts.
I'm with Steve on this, see if the wires are even there and if so hook them up to a seven pin. Just make sure you remove the plug and any modified wiring and return it to as found.
It can really upset people (it does me) when people people decide to "FIX"/modify/break/in general screw around with my things that they borrow because they want to make it do what they want it to or do something with it I don't do with it. Accidents happen and I understand that and as long as you cover the repairs I'm good with that, but when you intentionally change something and come up with some lame excuse that just pisses me off.
Update: I bought a 7 way plug, attached the blue to the blue post, and white to white post. Plugged that into my 7 way receptacle on the truck, and the 4 flat into the 4 flat receptacle on the truck. Works like a champ! Put loop connectors on the blue and white so I can easily remove my plug and store it for next time...👍👍

Good job Racinfan83, sounds like you are ready to roll!
But if the bearings have not been serviced in who knows how long would you hook and go 3000 miles?
If I saw the post right it belongs to someone running a junk yard and most JY's run the equipment into the ground.
Maybe ask when they were last serviced and if the say its good to go then go, other wise I would tell them I want to check.
No need to ruin a hub & axle because I did not check because its not mine.
Depending on who was going to check the bearings if they knew what they were doing I would say thanks for asking and yes check them.
Hey it is you stuck on the side of the road needing a bearing(s) just for not checking.
Just my .02

He has a demo business, a construction business, landscape, etc. This trailer hardly ever gets used (hasn't moved in over a year) as he has another with a big mower ramp and a tailgate assist that he likes better. I checked bearings and all that, aired up tires, put all new lights on it, fixed the ramp carriers, etc. I'm one of those who will return something in better shape than I got it. If it breaks I fix it.
3000 miles will be 1500 with an old 4cyl Jeep on it and empty the rest. So not a heavy load. It has 5k axles on it too.
I will just take a minute when I take it back and remove my 7way and tape the brake wires back like it was. With loops so when I need it again I can hook it right back up.
Hopefully this thread helps someone else in the future...👍👍
