I'm driving a 65' F250 styleslide Custom Cab slick with a rebuilt 352 V8 (.030 over) NP 435 Tranny. Drives great, sounds mean, and stops well with the drum brakes. I've already read everyone's opinions on upgrading to power brakes, thank you. I know it has the guts to tow what I want to tow, but I'm not sure about the bumper/receiver setup.
I'm picking up a donor van for my 93' Eurovan Weekender (Curb weight 4200 lbs.) using a car dolly. We'll be cruising slow and not following close.
I can't find any info on bumpers. My buddy doesn't think this can take the weight. It's all steel with the triangular plates that mount to the frame just like a frame mount receiver. I have a 2" ball that is rated correctly, but i'm not hot on just bolting that to the step. I'm thinking about picking up a step bumper receiver mount that will bolt in to the holes on the step there for more points of contact. Thoughts and informed opinions welcome.
Towing with a car dolly really won’t put all that much weight on the bumper. Personally, if the bumper is in good shape (nothing more than surface rust) I wouldn’t hesitate, but if you already have concerns then it may not be the best idea.
In my humble opinion No big hills? give yourself plenty of braking time and don't cob the throttle on take off. In my area these old farm trucks got more use over the rated load then under. Broke 2 axle housing on a uni hauling fuel to the combines.
Yep, I thought it would be fine as it is made of 3/8" Steel and clearly mounted for towing. I think the word "Bumper" just made my buddy worry for me. Iowa to MN is pretty flat and wide open. I only have to worry about ****** passing fast and cutting me off, maybe I will make a passive aggressive sign in MN spirit.
