I have a 1997 351w roller motor that the timing cover is broken on, is a 1996-2001 Explorer 5.0 timing cover compatible or do I need one off of another roller 351w?
Timing cover should be the same on those two. The only difference between any of the timing covers is the direction that the pump rotates on V belt systems vs serpentine belt systems.

You're wrong. The Explorer motor used a completely different timing cover, it also was used on the 94-95 Mustangs. Water pumps are different as well.

Yeah I just googled the explorer timing cover. I assumed they used the same timing cover as every other serpentine 302. Ford and their infinite wisdom of one-off parts...
There are a bunch of different timing covers available, ignoring those with a fuel pump boss for a second there are standard rotation and reverse rotation as well as a universal version, those with the crank sensor boss and those without, and those with a dipstick tube hole and those without. This diagram shows some of those and the last one down is the one I believe is needed here.

Yea, that's it. The top middle is the 94-95 Stang and 96-2001 Explorer/Mountaineer cover. If I'm not mistaken that was also used on the last year's T-Bird/Cougar too

This is the style of timing cover that the roller 351w would have came with.
This is for a Mustang, the pickups and vans used a different cover with the coolant ports reversed. See the pic Conanski posted with the various covers.
They may be the same, I'm not 100%. Seems like 86 was the first year for the reversed cover though
I looked into this further. I think you were correct. My 1986 5.0 w/v-belt is the same as the'88 Crown Vic w/serpentine.
On the'86, E3AE left. E5AE right, on the Crown Vic
